View Full Version : Altima Production to Start August 8th
""A lot has been written about the cost side, but the report shows that we're also doing a good job boosting volume and market share," said Jack Collins, vice president of marketing and product planning for Nissan North America Inc.
In April, Nissan broke ground on a $930-million plant in Canton, Miss., which will produce new minivan, full-size pickup and sport-utility models. Production is expected to begin in summer 2003.
Collins said Nissan will strive to become even more efficient at its Smyrna plant when it starts making the new Altima, slated to start production August 8."(auto.com)

These are pre-production models for testing, showing to dealers, the press, tweaking last minute details, auto shows, etc...

The Altima will be available in mid August to earlier September, there will be many of them, I expect the 2.5S model will be everywhere! The 3.5SE MIGHT be a little harder to find with the options one would want, but there is no way the Altima will debut at that time above and not have plenty of produced cars by the beginning of October, if they don't make the car fast enough, they will loose sells, and those sells will go to the Accord and the new Camry, so believe me, it will be out very soon, because Nissan needs this car, they don't need to make any mistakes, esspecially gas mileage and 0-60 times, and I believe they can do it. I can't wait!

Why would you think that? By late August, they'll be near full-speed on the assembly line and have cars to dealers, in quantity, by September/October. This isn't a niche vehicle, this is the Nissan car. They'll have plenty at your local dealer well before Christmas.

I sure hope that Nissan does not make the same mistake they made with the Sentra here. It is only this year that the cars are moving like crazy, even though they were introduced into the Canadian market before last summer.
The Altima better be available in 3.5 SE trim with leather and all the extras by November because that is when I'll get mine. And they better hope they have a manual for me in my colour of choice because I don't want to wait a day more than I have to.
I'm sure that Nissan knows that the public is aware of this vehicle, and already salivating impatiently for this car, so they'll be smart and produce lots of them, and get them to the dealers on time.

you are very right, i estimate 10% of canadian Sentra buyers were driven away from the 2 month wait
i really hope that doesnt happen with the altima too!

While it's too bad poeple had to wait so long for a Sentra, I can see Nissan's problem. I understand Sentra's sales went up @ 1900% in Western Canada this year. It must be hard to anticipate those numbers. If your under people go elsewhere due to lack of cars. If you have too many, you have to dish out incentives on a great brand new car. I'd sooner be short than have too many...
According to Automotive News.com the New Altima goes on Sale September 13th.
