These are the supposed plans for the new Infiniti lineup from 2001-2004. This information is from Autonews.Com.
INFINITI
G20: The G20 will be dropped in fall 2001.
I30: The I30 endures through the current model cycle but likely will be dropped after that. The front-wheel-drive Maxima clone doesn’t fit the new image Infiniti is trying to create.
The current I30’s fwd and styling are closely identified with the down-market Nissan brand. Models added to the line in the coming years will be rwd. The I30 and the Nissan Maxima will get a 3.5-liter V-6 in the 2002 model year.
XVL: This as-yet-unnamed production version of the XVL concept will compete against the Lexus IS 300 in the 2002 model year. The rwd sedan with a V-6 will occupy the same $30,000-plus price range as its fwd I30 cousin but offer more performance and handling than the I30. It also may offer a continuously variable transmission.
Rear-drive luxury sedan: Infiniti is considering a new rwd sedan in the $40,000 range. A Japan-market Nissan Gloria sporting Infiniti badges has been seen on Los Angeles-area roads. This would be Infiniti’s answer to the Lexus GS sedans, with both six- and eight-cylinder versions offered. It could be here as soon as the 2002 model year.
Q45: The flagship that Infiniti should have had all along will arrive in spring 2001 as a 2002 model. It will be big, fast and powerful with a 340-hp, 4.5-liter, V-8 engine; torsional rigidity is improved 40 percent over the current model. Adaptive cruise control will be offered. The new system maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. The interior is lush and full of soft curves.
QX4: Infiniti’s version of the Nissan Pathfinder sport-utility received a new 240-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 for the 2001 model year. The vehicle will be further differentiated from the Pathfinder when it is redesigned for the 2004 model year and receives a V-8 engine, eight-passenger seating and more amenities.
Full-sized sport-utility: Larger than the QX4, this full-sized sport-utility will be derived from Nissan’s full-sized pickup platform for the 2004 model year. Whereas the QX4 uses unibody construction, the full-sized sport-utility will be body-on-frame.
Car-based sport wagon: Coming in summer 2002 as a 2003 model, Infiniti will have an entry to compete against the Lexus RX 300 and Acura MD-X. Product planners want sportier on-road manners than the competition. The new vehicle will be derived from the next Altima/Maxima platform.
Sports car: A performance coupe based on the Skyline sold in Japan has been dropped from product plans.

hay, a question. why doesn't nissan/infiniti use the variable valve timming on their vehicles?
honda used it in even the civic as early as 92 (though didn't put vtec on the body until 93). now both honda and toyota uses valve timming, vtec and vvti, respectively, on all their cars.
i can't imagine that it is so expensive, and the consumer would appreciate it alot. nissan/infiniti isn't competing with their competetors. i've always liked nissan, but they've got to step up to the plate...

From what I've heard... Nissan only experimented with the whole variable valve timing thing with their SRXXVE engines. I guess because they've actually been developing the whole QR series of motors (which I think replaces the KA and SR blocks) and which is designed for more torque anyways (which is a Nissan staple anyways) I think the whole high horsepower output of the variable valve timing systems come at a sacrifice of torque or something like that (look at the S2000 and the SI). I would have loved to have one of those VE motors but if they can bring out the QR20 with like 180hp and a $hitload of torque I'll be happy.

from what i know the VQ35DE in the Path/QX4 has variable valve timing, but it's not the same as VTEC

IIRC, they have this system, called NEO-VVL in Japan, also in their RB-series straight six engines (Skyline and its platform).
I can't understand why they haven't put the SR20VE into G20 - it would virtually resurrect this overpriced and underpowered good handler http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/wink.gif

From what I've heard the entire SR series is going to be retired, VE (VVL) included. Someone said that Nissan had just been toying around with the VE/VVL concept and all that but had probably been developing the QR motors to replace the KA and SR blocks anyways. Also I think the RB series motors are also going to be retired.

Here in NZ the Primera can be had with the SR20VE engine, it puts out about 189hp, and it is a pretty good performer, I don't know why they didn't put it in the G20.
P.S other cars have the SR20VE as well:
Presea
Wingroad
Sunny SR16VE

The 2001 QX4 has continuously variable valve timing combined with a variable-flow intake manifold. The 2002 Q45 will have both of the above, plus titanium valves.

Just a quick note, it's about time they got around to killing the G20 and I30. Maybe now they can concentrate on making Infiniti cars truly unique automobiles.

Thats why I think it will be changed to RWD but it posses a problem in lineup for Infiniti. They have the XVL (G20), I30 (maybe going RWD), and GS430/5 series competitor based off of the Gloria. The Gloria besed car is going to be a roket with a 0-60 probably in mid 5's. The XVL car should have a 0-60 of mid 6's to low 7's. How does the I30 fit in with a 0-60 time. If you make it in low to mid 6's is fine but it conflicts with the XVL.
Maybe 0-60's shouldnt be important in fitting in the lineup. If you can make a car as fast as possible and keep the price down the better. Who cares if every Infiniti model did it in 5 seconds? That would just mean the the lineup is extrodanary in straight line performance. Now that I think about it I see no problem in how to keep the I30 in the lineup. In my mind, Its going to stay.

The reason why they didn't put it in the G20 was that Nissan was dirt poor at the time and the engine wasn't yet certified by the U.S. Feds. It costs a lot (don't know how much) of money to certify a new engine in the U.S. ... Nissan just couldn't afford it at the time. Of course, the G20's sales suffered because of it...

Yes, the new full-sized sport utility vehicle will be the largest sport-ute in the world, featuring the world's first "fuel suction system" - an improvement over traditional "fuel injection." The engine (rumored to be two highly modified Q45 motors welded together at the engine block) will produce an amazining 1200 ft/lbs of torque and will average 2.4gpm (gallons per mile). http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif

I think slowpoke nailed it when he sez Nissan couldn't afford to certify the SR20VE engine. I heard it costs half a mil, plus driving time.
Sounds like the infusion of cash from Renault is being spent in more ponies for all future Infiniti's.

Interesting that Infiniti/Nissan is going to kill the I30. (Or "interesting that AutoNews.com _thinks_ Infiniti/Nissan is going to kill the I30").
It's currently their best-selling car, and it and the QX4 are their main showroom draws right now. If RWD is an improvement that the company believes consumers want/need, I could see possibly changing the I30 from FWD to RWD. Regardless of what the company "wants" to become, however, their end goal is to make money. Killing off an established, top-selling product in order to "recreate the corporate image" will not go over well w/ Shareholders.
(I should know... I am one!)

I think slowpoke must be a spy from Pontiac or Kia or something. I wonder if that SUV engine he mentioned would be a diesel. slowpoke needs to re-check with his "inside sources" and play more golf.

#102 of 619: New Ford Announcement (poligraf) Tue 15 Feb '00 (08:10 PM)
2/15/Y2K, Deadborn, Michigan.
Chearful cries erupted in a group of potential customers when Ford Motor Company announced their biggest SUV to date - the Execution. Based on the commercial truck platform, Execution can seat the same 9 people as the Ex-Curse-Is-On, but in much greater comfort. It is powered by the v12 diesel engine from the Centurion tank. "Soccer is a sport for weak!", told one of the consumers, eagerly waiting for the first Execution to roll out from the new factory in Hell, MI. Mrs. Ham B. Urger also told the correspondent that her boys are young sportsmen, and she does not want to be called a soccer mom. She wants to start the new breed of moms - the Sumo Mom ;-))) As an additional news from Ford, they are making available new life insurance service for owners of smaller cars. These services will be available when the first Executions go to dealers.
