This weekend's Indy 500 is an all or nothing situation for Nissan with only one driver competing with an Infiniti Indy engine. Originally Ross Cheever, Eddie Cheever's brother was slated to race but his participation was pulled at the last minute because of a lack of resources according to the owner/driver Cheever. Eddie Cheever himself, easily qualified in tenth place with an average speed of 221.270 mph.
Cheever said this past Saturday, ""I believe we have the best race engine out there. I had the best race engine in Orlando, I felt I was stronger than anybody else in Phoenix, and I was very, very close to (then race leader) Mark Dismore when we had an electronics problem at Las Vegas. People have to understand that other teams have a minimum of $500,000 invested in their engine inventory, and it's very hard to take those assets and dump them to move to Infiniti. However, I believe that when the 35A Infiniti engine comes out, there will be a lot of Oldsmobile engines on the market."
Some strong words - maybe but we'll see how this weekend shapes up.

Think it's going to be a good one this year; wish I could be there.

I hope Eddide takes the 500, although the odds are not good http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/grin.gif

Actually, I think another person qualified using an Infiniti powered car. He did on the last hour of the last day using a back-up car of another driver who's main car is Oldsmobile powered. I'll try and dig up something on this new guy, but he did sound like he really liked the Infiniti engine.
BTW- I think there are 33 cars in the race

I don't know squat about IRL. So when I checked out the results of this race, every car except for Cheever and his team member had Olds Aurora engines. What's the deal with this? Are Olds and Infiniti the only manufacturers who make engines for this series?

GM/Olds and Nissan/Infiniti are the only manufacturers in this series. They are normally aspirated dohc 3.5L V-8s that are supposed to be be based around production V-8 engines.
Also during the Indy 500, two drivers; Cheever and Steve Knapp drove Infiniti powered cars.
