View Full Version : Nissan boss says no to F1

In an Autosport article http://www.autosport.com/newsitem.cfm?id=16941&series=5 , Nissan's CEO, Carlos Ghosn, is quoted as saying Nissan will not enter F1 racing anytime soon. This comes as no surprise since its partner Renault recently bought the Benetton F1 team and will mark a major return to the Grand Prix series next year.

What is disappointing is his more general statement that "you can not expect us to come back to racing for another two or three years". This probably rules out any near term involvement in LeMans (where Nissan came within a whisker of winning in '98), the Safari Rally (WRC, where Nissan has had several victories), or Daytona (IMSA, where it won the 24 hour race in '92 and '94).

Nissan's strength has always been in sports car racing, and with the new Z and GTR set to debut soon, let's hope Ghosn has a change of mind.

But at the same time, Nissan's last Le Mans effort was inconsistent and unsustained. Successful Le Mans teams always compete over the course of several years (read: not 2 or 3 years).

Honda and Toyota can compete in Formula 1 because they have the financial capability to do so at this point. Nissan does not. At least Mr. Ghosn is smart enough to realize that Nissan doesn't have the money to spend on a Formula 1 or Le Mans(LMP) project.

But, there are strong rumors of a Nissan works entry into the ALMS GT class.

With the launch of GTR in a couple of years, I'd expect Nissan to run then new GTR in some sort o fracing program.

As much as I'd like to see that also, that won't happen.

RainMeister you are the one images/icons/wink.gif
I'm disappointed from these latest news because here in Europe we enjoy F1 and it's hard to see Honda and Toyota (by 2002) making their own game images/icons/frown.gif
Nissan's spirit lives in motorsports and it is proven with the historical victories in IMSA images/icons/wink.gif
I live to see Nissan in F1 and this one of is my dreams for Nissan.

It's time for Nissan to get into our harts and to begin the new ERA in motorsports. images/icons/blush.gif
Please send us more news about this subject images/icons/cool.gif

Want news?

Renault is re-entering F1 as a works engine supplier in 2002. It's not really new news, but the important thing is that Nissan will never be in F1 as long as Renault is in F1, and as long as Renault owns the majority of Nissan's stocks.

Alex, Renault is returning as a full-fledged constructor through its purchase last March of the Benetton Team. Their return will hopefully add some excitement and challenge to Ferrari, McLaren and Williams.

Renault is also leading the charge among mfrs for a break-away series to compete with F1 in 2007. One wonders what such move will do to a series that is already heavily criticized for being a boring procession.

isnt renault building engines for their car too?

they have this new system: Electromagnetically operated valves
when functionning correctly, it is said that the engine will be able to rev above 20000 RPM

in 2001, the system didnt work properly and renault said it was still working out the bugs, but if and when it works, Renault will be back on top

also, if u ever hear the engine, you can notice a distintive hum not present in all other F1 cars, i verified that at the Canadian GP this year, i also have an MP3 of the engine in a test cell

Renault is building the entire package a la Ferrari. The Benetton name is history and it will probably be called Team Renault.

I remember when their then novel hydraulically-actuated valves gave the Williams-Renault several years of dominance during the '90s.

Come on Mav1178 you don't know this for sure.
Besides this is the right time for Nissan to develop the engine technology with the support of Renault and without spending a lot of money for an entry level development for a new car like Toyota did images/icons/cool.gif
As for Renault please read the following very interesting news about the stolen engine plans that keep Renault back in schedule for an F1 championship!
By the way Renault is an engine supplier in F1 images/icons/cool.gif
