View Full Version : Will there be an R35?

I've been lurking in this forum for a while, and I wanted to know if there's a "real" answer for this question.
I'm wondering, because MotoRex is saying that, according to their contacts at Nissan, there aren't any further plans for the GT-R after the R34.
But, I've read elsewhere that Nissan's plan with the 350Z is to keep it as a "purist's sportscar", and that no twin-turbo Z will be built, in order to keep the price down. The intention here is that later Nissan can introduce the GT-R35 as an Infiniti to the US at a higher price point ($50k+) and put it into competition with the Z06, Viper, Porsche 911, etc. I haven't heard that the car would be called "Skyline", but there are whisperings that a GT-R is coming some time in the not-to-distant future?
Any truth to any of this, or is the R34 the last of the breed?
I thought it was public knowledge? images/icons/confused.gif
With the new GTR concept car hat Nissan has paraded around recently, they've stated a few times that it was as sign of their commitment to the future of the GTR name. While the finaly look and specs of the car are not even close to release, they have stated publicly that there WILL be a next generation GTR. Their testing of a twin turbo V6 in their JGTC cars is further evidence of this.
The GTR will however be seperated from the Skyline name and chassis. It's supposed to be built on a variation of the FM platform (G35 sport coupe, 350Z). The Skyline will be their performance oriented coupes and sedans, but the GTR will be a totally seperate car which will probably be the pinnacle of all things Nissan.
Anything much beyond this is speculation at this point.

I think Nissan will do a good job with it technically, especially because they are taking so much time designing it. My only problem is the GT-R concept, I really hate the way it looks, especially the front, anyone else feel this way? I mean I've been looking at it for a while, but I just can't get over it, it's just not right. I have a drawing here of what the next GT-R should look like, but unfortunately I don't have a scanner, but I'll try to post it later.

Lets hope Nissan comes out and makes a serious statement with the R35 GTR. The one thing that isn't clear, or that I havn't heard personally, is if it's going to retain its AWD system. Anyone else know? As far as looks go --- I think its pretty smooth, certainly aggressive enough -- but I admit that it could be toned down a little. Overall, I'm encouraged by all of the rumours and what we've seen --- even enough to consider holding off on the Z / G coupe I want to build.

Since this car is Nissans performance flagship, it only seems to reason that they will get it right. The good thing is that it is taking lots of time which clearly shows their dedication to making this car the best it can possibly be. What a sweet day it will be when those production lines start up and the first one rolls out. images/icons/grin.gif

We/Us/You can speculate all you want. There are some interesting things happening at Nissan. With the G35 /Skyline in Japan. The 350Z coming soon , and the Infiniti G35 coupe coming soon after that.
I have seen a production 350Z upclose and personal - have pics of one sitting in front of MotoRex, maybe I will put them up soon. One of the good things about being down the street from Nissan.
For the money its going to be a great car.
Mr. Tamura "father of the R34 GT-R" product planner of the R34 was in the US and in England recently. He wanted to get together with US Skyline owners and owners in England and see what they had to say about the cars. He brought a video camera and recorded what we had to say. He owns an R32 and an R34. We got a lot of good information from him about Skylines. We learned a lot in the 2 days we spoke with him.
He said - not a lot actually about the next gen car - but he said he wanted to bring the next generation GT-R to the US. He also said its at least a few years away.....
What exact form the car will have will be up to the Nissan people. I have heard a few different rumors from Twin turbo AWD to Supercharged AWD. I have also heard that they may make it to go up against the M3 GT-R with a V-8 and rear wheel drive.

Expect the new GT-R to be slightly softer, for instance they got rid of the guy who made all the GT-Rs and replaced him with a new dude (begins with m). His first iteration is the R34-M spec, which is not as harsh as the V-spec.
The next gen will be softer for more buyers.

Mr. Tamura is the product planner of the GT-R. When he was just here I am pretty sure that he had not been replaced since then.
The M-spec was one version of the GT-R. But after the M-spec came the Vspec II Nur. The M-spec was a very limited run of cars.

Maybe Mr Howlett is a little mixed up Sean. Tamura is the man and will be for quite some time. With a track record like he has and the credentials I don't think he is going anywhere soon.

The M-Spec came after the V-SpecII. The M-Spec is a limited production run of only 1000 cars. However there has only been about 3800 V-specII made in the last three years and the V-specII production numbers are in line with previous years but the M-spec is added. Production is stopping in September but current stocks should hold us over untill the release of something new in the fall of 2003.
The M-spec has a newer software version for the control of the ATTESA E-TS Pro which has a "more driver friendly" programm. Mr T., the R34 designer, said "The M-spec is more for and endurance race and agressive daily driving while the V-SpecII is more for sprints and time trials"
Translated Nissan Japan skyline web page (http://www.t-mail.com/cgi-bin/tsail?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nissan.co.jp%2FGT-R%2FR34%2F0105%2FDATA%2FSOUBI%2Findex.html&sail=full&lp=ja-en&requestType=T-Sail)
The M-spec dose not have softer suspension. The Traction control system and shocks are designed for higher speeds, IE the autoban (or at least that was Mr. T's excuse for designing a suspension for over 140 MPH, which may seem softer at lower speeds.
Just thought I would set the record

I thought there were only 250 M-Specs produced, or maybe that is just 2002 models. Along with that 750 Nur Specs in 2002. Is this correct?

Correct. The only difference between the Nur and the M-spec is a parallel port that allows you to download 4 minutes of driving data. I am not sure what all in entailed in the data that can be downloaded but that in its self is pretty cool. Honestly I think, and hope that there will be enough R34s on the market for years to come. Worst case I fly to japan. Buy two. Have one a show car. and the other a daily driver. Only I will make the show car my parts car and it will be shown in my girage. Ya do the same thing with old Jags and well... all extreme sports cars of the past. It would be a great investment and a lot of fun.
I am getting pictures developed of the drive I take every day home from work. You will understand when I post them why I am a sports car nut.
Edit...
Clarification of parts car. If it is a show car and you sign an agreement that you won't take it on the road then you don't have to pay motorex to legalize it. Shipping would only be about 1200 USD and for the price of what motorex wants for one bought through them I could have two. O' and because Motorex is selling the cars in California they can not sell one that has been made in the previous 2 years, or at least that is what they said on their site. However they can legalize one if you import it yourself and contract them to legalize it. So 80 for 2 used R34s in Japan 2500 shipping (Cargo ship) and 25000 for Motorex to legalize one. Shounds good to me.

Vspec
Mspec
Vspec II
Vspec II Nur
Mspec Nur
I think thats the right order. The original M-specs may have been at the same time as the Vspec II's. I think the orginal M-specs was a run of cars - 50 only.
The Nur's are a limited edition of 1000 cars. 250 M-specs , 750 Vspec II's.
You have a lot of information - just not all of it is correct.

Nismo has had an add on board for the stock display that allows you to monitor and record engine parameters and download though a Serial port to your laptop. It also has a button so you can record laptimes. I am not sure if the M-spec Nur has this - but I will look at the information that Mr. Tamura gave to us when he was here.
