man, i've been needing to do one as well, but with all those products out there, is that all you really need? car wash and polish? no wax? or is the mother's polish, wax?

polish and wax are two separate things, unless its cleaner wax. Only need to polish to take out the fine scratches and swirlies, then put on a good wax for protection. Good wax/polish systems have at least three stages. Also I wouldn't use a mitt to wash unless you can keep it very clean, they can hold dirt and scratch the car up. The question of how much you need depends on how good you want it and how bad the car is to start off.

i picked up meguiar's 3 step deep crystal system:
1) Paint cleaner
2) Polish
3) Wax
but before I did the paint, the day before I washed the car with dish soap to strip it of any old wax that may have been on it.
This being my first experience doing a complete cleaning the results are excellent. The car looks immaculate!
btw. what product do you use to get that incredibly smoooth to touch finish to your car? Is it glaze?
