Lexus announced Thursday it will begin producing the SC 430, its first convertible, in January 2001. The car, closely based on the SC 430 concept vehicle introduced at the Tokyo auto show in October 1999, will hit U.S. dealerships in March.

The hard-topped convertible is powered by a new 300-hp 4.3-liter V-8 engine that will be introduced in the Lexus LS 430 this fall.

Bryan Bergsteinsson, Lexus group vice president and general manager, expects to sell about 10,000 SC 430 convertibles per year. Lexus is not disclosing pricing on the car, but Bergsteinsson said it would be comparable to the LS 430 and in the mid-$50,000s.

The convertible replaces a coupe version of the current LS 400, first introduced in 1991. Lexus sold about 20,000 coupes in its first full year of production, but sales have dropped to about 2,500 a year, Bergsteinsson said.

Looks like a rounded off prelude. Not bad, i like the current one also but it lacks personality.

I think the wheels are ugly, the grill is too low, and it looks like a SLK http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/grin.gif

Hopefully there's a 6 cylinder-prefer the Supra I6 http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/cool.gif

not a bad design, but I think the upcoming Mercedes SL will look better. even the current SL looks extremely classy despite its age.

Nissan should bring the Silvia Varietta over here as an Infiniti convertible (i know it's probably a good bit smaller than the SC430). either that, or build a convertible off the XVL

it doesn't matter, though. i'm not even 20 years old, so i may or may not ever be rich enough to buy one of these snob mobiles

Lexus Division says it has booked more than 1,000 sold orders for its first convertible, the new SC 430 hardtop, even though the car doesn't go on sale until next March... http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/cool.gif

The hardtop is interesting, ala SLK http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/grin.gif

Some more pics...I'm not sure if I like it...it must be the phunky pruprle color or something and the small TT profile. If it looks better in person and performs as expected (0-60mph in ~5.7 seconds), I may forgo the new NSX or 4000GT.
