It had to happen!
Intro:
------
I was going out on saturday night to celebrate a friend's birthday. Driving my 1994 Maxima, I was picking up a few people when i had a bad accident with a 1992 Saturn.
Here is how it happened:
Story:
------
I was on a street near my house going northbound, i approached an intersection to which i had NO STOPSIGN. The crossing road HAD a stopsign. I was going about 60-65 KM/H when suddenly, 3 car-lengths away from the intersection, i see a car that started turning on my road! 3 car lengths to make a decision! I tell you, as soon as i saw the other car i KNEW i was going to smash it. In that instant, i swerved to avoid the car but alas, i was too close. I closed my eyes. They say your whole life flashes in front of your eyes. That did not really happen though i got a few sudden images in my head. Suddenly i heard what must have been one of the loudest noises. My Airbag deployed and my face slammed into it. I could not breathe from the smoke and i could not see anything either. I was in a panic, and my car was still moving ever so slowly. In that 2-3 seconds my car rolled, i seriousely thought i had broken my neck or something. after that my car rolled into another parked car (a 1st gen Altima). As i regained my sense, i immediately freed myself from my seatbelt, jumped out of the car and checked if any of my 3 passengers were hurt. After that I turned off the still running engine (my car was not driveable tho). I ran over to the saturn to check if the driver and passenger were also fine. No one got hurt, thank god. I saw the damage on the saturn... bad... left front totally smashed, glass everywhere, liquids everywhere on the pavement. I finally looked at my Maxima... when i saw it i knew this was no small accident. my whole front end was totalled. by that time all the cars' occupants had freed themselves. I, my passenger, 1 of my rear seat occupants and both people in the saturn had seatbelts on. My other passenger in back seat had no seatbelt, she was putting nail polish on. She got a large bump on her head. I asked everyone again if anyone was injured. No one... I then called 911 to get a cop to the scene. By that time there were 20 people at the scene looking on. More people showed up, including all my friends that were going out with me that night. I then proceeded to fill out the crash forms for the insurance company with the other driver. I then filled another form for the Altima I slightly bumped. We both agreed on our statement and it was in my favor (ill explain later). The cops arrived and were of not much help... just a presence... I then called a tow truck to my maxima could be dropped off at my mechanic. After that, 2 hours had passed at the scene. My friends Insisted that i still go out with them so they can cheer me up with alcohol. I was very angry and shaken up at the moment but i accepted. so we went out, had as much fun as possible given... Im still very angry.
Technical:
----------
She (other driver) claimed she stopped at stopsign and i believe her. but she said she didnt see me come from the other way (there were bushes and cars blocking view). BUT STILL when u arrive at a 1-way stop you have to SLOWLY ease into the other street to FULLY see if any cars are coming.BUT NO, she just pulled out after her stop. she was turning left so my speed + her speed towards me made the accident that bad. The police said it was not really anyone's fault but she should have payed more attention to the road. DAMN right she should have! Her airbag did not deploy (do 92 saturns have any?) I wish i had a camera so i could post a picture...
et caetera:
-----------
The birthday girl was my front seat passeger, what a present for her! She was pretty shaken up, all the girls were.
The airbag and seatbelts prevented any injuries from happening.
I hope no one has to endure an airbag deployment, EVER. Its a disgusting feeling. U cannot breathe because of the gunpowder smoke and carbon dioxide. and the fact that i could not see anything added to the panic.
Funny, i KNEW i was going to smash the car as soon as i saw the other vehicle and in the 2-3 seconds after the crash, the silence in my car was morbid and terrifying.
Any of these 4 things would have prevented the accident: 1- i didnt even feel like going out 2- i was going to pick up one of my passengers before the others but i didnt 3- i was gonna take another route downtown but felt like the detour 4- i left my house 5 mins later than expected.
What a coincidence EH?
The insurance might declare it a total loss and pay for market value or it might pay for the big repairs. I will find out in 2 days.
ill keep you posted.
All that said i would like to state that this was not my fault. Ordinarily im the most alert driver but that night it was too close too late, i could have done nothing... maybe, MAYBE if i had taken the brand new 2000 Altima we own, the ABS would have prevented the crash, but what's done is done. Its just metal and plastic. No one got injurred, but damn... my beloved maxima, even if fixed will never be the same. I loved the sound of that engine, i loved the car, now its a wreck!
DAMN!
