Kia's names mid-sized sedan Optima

July 28 -- Kia Motors America has named its new 2001 mid-sized sedan the Optima.

"Most people in the focus groups associated the name with being optimal, outstanding or top-of-the-line," said ******** Macedo, Kia executive vice president of marketing and sales.

The Optima, which will enter showrooms in December, will come with a choice of either a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine with 149 hp, or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6.

Kia has not yet determined how much the Optima will cost.

All I gotta say is WHAT THE HELL IS KIA THINKING. It's bad enough we got LS400 and Lincoln LS then we got MB CL class and Acura CL. Now we have to worry about Altima and Optima. I hope Kia doesn't think they can compare to it. This really makes me wonder if car companies consider their competition at all sometimes.

My 4WD Kyosho R/C car was called Optima. That's what I associate the name with.

Oh, and I still have the car.

The one who should be really really scared is Mazda as it is not as popular as the other japanese brands and the 626 has a 4-cyl 2.0L engine (smaller than the Optima), and V6 2.5L engine (same size and output as the Optima). And I believe the optima will be cheaper, too.
