I was totally shocked when I went home this past weekend to visit my parents--they live just over 2 hours away.

They traded in their 1989 Maxima and their 1992 Nissan truck and they bought....a Toyota Highlander. I spent the weekend cruising around in it. I like it http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif

Of course now that it is their only vehicle, my mother is sort of protective. My father and I went to drive the Highlander around the farm and my mother says "Now is a good time to go, its very dry. I wouldn't want you getting mud on it." LOL

did they try out the escape? i hear it's pretty damn good as far as car-based SUV's go -- a driver's SUV. that is, if you can forgive the recalls/reliability issues

I might need to explain a little about my parent's former vehicles. My parents are both 73. My father bought his first vehicle in 1949 right after coming out of the Army. He bought a Ford pickup. He bought another Ford pickup in 1964 and another one in 1974. My father had so much trouble with the 74 Ford, he swore he would never buy another Ford. In 1969, when a truck wouldn't do as the only vehicle for a family of 4, my parents bought a Dodge Dart Custom. They had that until 1977. Because the Dart was a great, dependable car, my parents stuck with Chrysler and bought a 77 Plymouth Volare station wagon(we got a dog in 76). The Volare broke a family tradition of keeping cars at least 10 years. The Volare with it's incurable stalling during turns, lasted only 2.75 years in the family. Unfortunately, now there was only GM left to choose from. My parents then bought a 1980 Chevy Citation--most recalled car in history(at least it was during it's time). But because GM continued to pay for repairs--3 trannys and 2 engines, 2 steering racks, etc--long after the warranty ran out, my parents kept it until 1988. Then they switched to Japanese cars at my suggestion. First was the Maxima and then a Nissan truck. The Maxima had well over 200,000 miles on it. The truck, used only around the farm, had only 54,000 miles on it but the bed had rusted away.

So, no, they didn't test drive the Ford Escape. They test drove the MDX, Pathfinder and the Mitsu's.
