I believe those overhangs are just cladding to hide the car's true proportions. It's how Ferrari has always guarded their mules.

If you go to the link (carconnection) they have a computer generated version that has those long overhangs...

Yeah, if you look beyond those god awful wheels and the body additions, you can tell there appears to be something very cool underneath.
