I really don’t know much about bikes either but I would love to get one to run around town in, just to go to friends house and stuff. Right now I like the Yamaha YZF-R1, although 150hp and 385lbs will make every car a standstill in comparison, I think the sensation would be awesome. I'm looking forward to all the responses in this topic.

The R1 is a beast, a guy I know just bought one. Way to much bike for a first timer. I've always liked the look of the CBR's also.

My little brother bought his first bike about six months ago. It's a 250 virago (we liked to call it the viagra) Talk about slow, his buddy beat him in a 93 ford full size, but it was a great bike to learn on. He just sold it and is now buying a ducatti(sp)

You've got the right idea, start off with something small, than graduate to something big once you get your wings. I'd stay away from anything over 500cc for now. Too many people think they can handle a big bike right away and end up dead. Kawasaki makes the EX500, it's a dated design, but has way more sport potential than any virago. Buell also makes a great beginners bike called the Blast. I'd suggest looking into the two to decide which one suits you better. The Virago would be fine too, but it's severely under powered and no fun in traffic. Make sure you take a riders safety course before you ride on open streets. You can find information on such courses at you local DMV.
