TOKYO, March 6 (Kyodo) -- Toyota Motor Corp. plans to purchase an equity stake of about 5% in Yamaha Motor Co. from Yamaha Corp. in a bid to beef up their cooperation in development of engines, sources familiar with the deal said Monday.
Toyota will formally announce the deal on Monday afternoon, the sources said.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, a major Japanese business daily, said in its Monday morning edition that Toyota will pay some 10 billion yen to Yamaha for the Yamaha Motor shares. Yamaha, a leading maker of musical instruments, is the biggest shareholder of Yamaha Motor, with a 33.3% stake.

Yamaha Motor currently supplies 1,000 to 5,000 engines a month to Toyota for use in the Supra, Altezza and other cars.

I think this is a great news, since they did great stuff together before.

I wonder what will become of Yamaha and Ford's relationship...if it will totally come to an end. Even after the Taurus SHO
V-8 engine and car were canned, there were rumors that Yamaha was still performing consulting work for the Blue Oval.

I think Yamaha also made the 4AGE engine, and parts of the MKI MR2.

As with the relationships with Ford, I don't think there is any left.

I also heard that Toyota is not very happy with GM exchanging engines with their arch rival Honda.

i heard the engine exchange deal honda and GM have may lead to a pickup truck for HOnda. this may be good for nissan in the fact that GM engines suck in comparison to Nissan engines and may tarnish Honda's reliability record. if honda was smart they would've designed their own engines to compete with the super durable engines found in Nissan and Toyota trucks.

I am not a big lover of GM, but GM does have some good engines. Even though a lot of their engines are old school pushrod, GM has managed to refine them for smoothness and power, a la 3800 series with supercharger. Or the new all alloy Corvete engine. Or the Northstar V-8. Those are all pretty good engines.

If you want to talk about crappy engines, choose Dodge or Chyrsler. Yuck!
