Hey....I was thinking about purchasing some Dunlop SP5000's for my 240sx. I need a good tire for traction and I've been told by a tire guy that they have an AA traction rating. I can't get traction with my current ones through both first and second gear in the dry. I'm guessing the good traction hurt the treadwear, but I'm not sure. Anybody used these tires or can give me some advice? Thanks.

I assume by good traction you are speaking of dry traction. Therefore you want soft rubber compound tires [something like 160 treadwear index] not hard 300-400 index all season types.....the AA traction rating on the D5000 relates to wet straight stopping distance. [no test for wet handling]
The only definition of an all season tire is that the rubber to void ratio will be 75% [or 25% open space] which is bad for dry traction.
Check tirerack for AVS Intermediate [160 treadwear] close outs for use on driven wheels.

That's Yokohama AVS Intermediate... by the way.

WONDERFUL tires, but summer tires for sure. Not good in cold weather (lumpy and hard, dangerous in snow).

If you're willing to swap tires from season to season, that's a good tire for summer.

If you want a year-round tire you'll have to settle for something mediocre.

What size tire??

All I can say is I have never been happier with an All season tire than the Dunlop SP5000's I have on my current 91 SE-R. I have driven in torrentail rains to ice and snow. Always secure and surefooted. Seem great in the dry just as well. But, I do drive aggressively but do not race. I am not sure what your priorites are for a tire, but these more than meet mine! <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif[/img]quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Toadgee:

Generally tires like the D5000's performance depends on static weight and turning stress on the tire.
A 225/60/15 is rated at 1510 pounds at 51 psi on a car which only places 900 pounds static obviously the tire will last longer and perform better than a car which places 1200 pounds on the same tire.
Generally operating at a &lt;70% load is much better.
