I thought the R33 Skyline GT-R had the best sound ever... but then I recently got to drive a 1976 280Z... oh man! I pressed the clutch and turn the key... WOW... talk about a sweet symphony being played by the 2.8L inline 6... nothin' like it in the world... http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/grin.gif http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/grin.gif http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/grin.gif

a guy i knew back in high school had a 3 cylinder subaru that I think had some muffler problems. it had to have the loudest exhaust sound of any car that size. it was really high pitched so people referred to his car as the 4-wheeled motorcycle. that had to be the biggest ghetto cruiser i've ever seen. i think he traded it in for a used VW rabbit

My first car I had was my '85 VW Jetta 1.8L. I put a replacement muffler which was not performance oriented but just an oem replacement when my second exhaust system went. It produced sounds like an aftermarket system but without the performance. When coming out of a corner and adding gas it always gave that great sound. The engine paired up with the exhaust system was mint. http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum//images/icons/smile.gif

Here's what to avoid...

...I had my A'PEXi GT Spec Exhaust on my car prior to me having installed the turbocharger components, so I was running around for a month NA w/ an oversized Large Turbo exhaust that measures at the widest of 4.5" ID through the muffler. Narrowest was 3"!!!

...On startup the car would rumble like a car would never do. It was much more than the Harley rumble. It will set off car alarms just from the startup...

...Driving in a parking lot or structure, this thing will set off car alarms if I ever lightly blip the throttle...

...After 5 minutes of driving in traffic, I wanted to pull my hair out from all that noise. People could hear me comming from a block away by the sound...

...Power was pathetic. Midrange was gone, completely gone. All the power existed only at 6krpm to the 6.5krpm redline. At 3krpm, the car would rumble so bad, that I felt like I was watching some war movie with the bass turned way up...

...Now with the pinwheel in the exhaust path, the sound is much more appreciatable. The deep, deep, deep rumble is now replaced by a mellow deep rumble. Startups are not as interesting as it use to be...

Waht is the stock exhaust setup on the Maxima? Is it true dual exhaust or anything cool like that? Does anybody know of any good aftermarket products for it (headers, etc)?

As for quality sounds, I've always enjoyed the low bass purr of a good 'ol american V8 (from the Corvette, specifically). The raucus V8 sound of the Camaro when throttled is always pretty boy-racer appealing to me (with glasspacs). Lastly, I've always liked the whine of the RX-7 engine revving up and the buzz of the turbo V6 on those Buick Grand Nationals....

If you look closely, you'll see that some of those guys (and girls) have just stuck a coffee-can-large tip on the tailpipe of a stock muffler. Doesn't get much lamer than that.

Oh, definetly. I just didn't post how the midrange came back when I stuff the A'PEXi silencer into the exhaust. It broght the power back alright.

As for the ricers, they don't hold a thing. MY exhaust is a true 3"+ exhaust where they just use a large coffee can as an exhasut.
