i'm having a hard time deciding between the se-r and the s13. i need a reliable car that will be a good autocrossing car. i like the se-r because of the sr20de and because it will probably give me lower insurance(i think). i like the s13 because it handles better, although i dont like the trucky engine, i dont care what you say. please fill me in on anything else and if you own one of these, convince me! one way or the other. thanks.

It depends. Do you like FWD or RWD? the 54/46 weight balance of the 240SX is hard to beat, especially when the engine is modified to put out more power. Go read the discussion that carried on previously. The question of S13 vs B13 came up before...

I have never driven in a sentra se-r,but I have driven a few 200sx se-r's and altima's and they don't even come close to the feeling you get driving in a well balanced rwd 240. Taking the 240 into a turn feels so much better than fighting torque steer in a fwd car. The se-r has a better p/w ratio than the 240, but the 240 can get good hp gains with only a few mods. You and every auto mag in the world have made a gripe about the 240's truck based engine, but the fact is these engine's are very strong and reliable. They also have a great amount of torque with a lot of power down low, just what you need when your powering out of a turn.
Damn it! I wish I still had my s14. 97 S14 SE Turbo, are you sure you don't want to sell your car? And if not, where will you be parking it while your away?....he,he

obviously nowhere near you... lol http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/grin.gif
I offered a ride along last time for the June 3rd track event. No one showed. But there were 3 240SX, and 2 SE-R all running that event. I drove them around... dori-dori style... I was trying to get some Honda folks into it, but they didn't show. Those that didn't show really missed out on a free roller coaster ride. There's nothing like the push, back into the seat from the turbo's power, and also the sensation from drifting...
The girls that were with us loved it a little too much. One of them sort of refuse to vacate the passenger seat because she was having too much fun. I drove 10+ sessions, and she rode along for 5 sessions. My brother-in-law got 2 session. The rest were to the Nissan folks. The best session was the last session where all the different class of cars were to run together, free-for-all. Man, I was chasing cars down hard until either they had a force error, or they waved me by.

97 S14 SE Turbo:
Let me know when you are in DFW again; I'd love to see your car.
In fact, it is in my plans to make a black colored nemesis to your car. Right now I'm chomping at the bit to buy this '97 SE with all the options (minus leather) in Tennesse. Its got 21.5k miles and he's selling it for $12.5k(!!). If I get it, though, serious mods are going to have to wait for about a year while I finish my last year of school.

I loath Autocross. It's as bad as drag racing. All that waiting for that little bit of track time...sheesh... I'm into the 10+ 20 minute full out sessions on a real roadcourse.... Now that's getting my money's worth...

Awww, come on...at least AutoX is cheap! Roadracing is $$...

But roadracing requires the cojones... Only thing you could takeout in AutoX is cones, where roadracing, you could destroy your car, other peoples car and stuff. Plus those pants wetting "mr toad's wild ride" out of control spins... http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/grin.gif
Also, the local autocross is about $20 bucks. That gets 4 runs of 1 minutes or less. So that's about $5.00 per minute or more if you are faster. Plus the time spent waiting in the hot sun and working the course.
The roadracing folks I run with cost $90 for a day of 5 sessions of 20 minutes. So that's $90 for 100 minutes, or $0.90 per minute... Most of the time I pay to run in another group for only half the price. So that makes it $135 for 200 minutes, or $0.675 per minute... Most if not all of the time, I leave early because I physically could not do it anymore. Way too much minutes at 8/10th or more...
Which one is more cost efficient for a speed addict?
Ultimate cost? Well, that's tougher. Smudged paint from cone damage or a wrecked $34k toy... plus risk of being dropped by insurance company and bodily injuries. For me, I'm willing to take the bigger risk for my personal enjoyment.

I think it was originally around 8 seconds.
You would probably have to run in one of the Prepared classes at an auto-x.

Sounds like an ad for a long distance phone company. http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif I like rear wheel drive. I wanted the SE-R before, but once I learned about the advantages of RWD, I only wanted RWD cars.

It depends on what U going to do with the car, drag racing, SE-R wins. Sooo eassy to make it go fast in straight line. They handle pretty good too, S14 Turbo, U seen Larry Birds Classic with the suspension ?? its pretty fast huh ? basic out of the box suspension, Rob Cadle and Larry Bird where all over this TTZ with slicks at Motorsports Ranch down in TX last Memorial day weekend- SE-R National Convention. The Z couldn't keep up with the SE-Rs, even on the straights, Robs all bolt on SE-R would still pull away. Now THATs power, SE-Rs are pretty well balanced and love to oversteer alot. Slap on a turbo U will have no problems recovering from the worst oversteer http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif
Mike Jez
93 SE-R SR20DET ( real thing), Arias 87mm pistons, GTi-R forged conn rods, GTi-R bolts, JWT Turbo ECU, NISMO 555cc injectors, TTZ fuel pump, TTZ MAF, JWT TTZ POP, JWT engine work-bored out to 2.1L, no turbo.....waiting for Fmax. and no $$$ in bank account.

do you guys know the suspension setup in the s13 and the se-r? i think the 240 is macphersons with a multilink in the back, but thats just a guess.
You're right about the 240 setup. I think the SE-R is struts all around, no? I'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif
