I'd go for the SE cuz if you wanted to you could upgrade to the 300ZX brakes alot easier than all the other models since the SE comes stock with 5lug wheels. No drilling the rotors or anything like that. Personally I like the styling of the S14A over the regular S14's. Just my opinion though.

yea i am looking at the SEs definitely. what are the differences between S14/S14A? (95/96 as opposed to 97/98?)
Jefe
Yeah, I think that's what he meant, although I have usually heard them referred to as S14a/S14b ...either way, the second one is 97-98.

S14a = '95-'96
S14b = '97-'99

Why the S14? I like the styling of the S13 A LOT more. With the S14 Nissan was trying to turn the 240 into a sporty luxury car, and it just doesn't look as good to me. I think it also had worse suspension than the S13. It does have a stronger chassis though so I guess it's what you want from the car.
What do you mean by worse suspension? The front strut/rear multilink design is basically the same. Any differences in spring rates/shock tuning/etc. can easily be fixed with aftermarket parts.
But I like the look of the S13 better too http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif

i actually like the S14 a lot better, but that's all personal preference. i like the rear of the car and the rims and the roofline better.
are you sure the S14 has a "worse" suspension? dont they have bigger rims too?

Comparing my relatively new s14 se and an old beat up 89 s13 coupe, it seems like the 89 was a lot more responsive in turning and leaned less. It seemed to oversteer a lot easier. Maybe because the 97 added a few pounds after the generation change. It could also be a difference in the wheelbase. I don't think it's anything to worry about if you plan on changing out the shocks, springs, sways and strut bars.

I don't remember where I read it (probably another string somewhere on these boards) but peoples' main gripe with the S14 was the suspension. I think the complaint was that it was too stiff/soft. But if you plan on changing all that out it doesn't matter. The S14 just looks like a generic compact sedan to me, looking at it from the side or the front nothing is unique about it. Not until you see those tail lights do you know...

It seems like when I got my s14, all I got was compliments on its looks. They agreed it looks sporty, aggressive, and high class at the same time.
It might has something to do with the rarity, expecially of the 97-98 models. To me it kind of resembles a baby sc400.
If you plan on doing engine work, the s14might be a better option because they have stronger pistons, but I think the compression was highest in the 91-94 s13.
If you're set on getting an s14 go for the 97-98 model, and get the 5 lug versions (SE or LE).

The SE's (and LE's maybe?) have 16" wheels. Base models still had 15", like the S13.

All KA24DE have the same compression (9.5:1). Earlier ones have more agressive cams. All are rated at 155 hp though, and the S14 KA's have a broader torque curve.

'98 LE has same 5 spoke 16X6.5 rims as '95-'98 SE.
I am curious to where the S14a/b naming convention came from. How did this start?
Dunno...just seems like a convenient way to differentiate them, I suppose.

Going 240 Huh? Good for you! A couple things come to mind.
The SE model has the Viscous Limited Slip, most people who don't get it end up wanting to swap later when they up the power. Get it now. Do you like the rounded front on the 95-96 model or the sharper look of the 97-98. As mentioned in earlier post, brake upgrade without having to redrill the rotors. In the last year we have actually seen aftermarket companies start to acknowledge the 240 exists, good timing. Word of warning, the S14 has a feeling of excessive body roll which many find awkward. But don't be fooled, 60mph around a 20mph curve doesn't even break the tires loose for me (stock). Upgrading the sway bars (Suspension tech.) pretty much stop it completely, but make the back end a little more loose (more fun!). It is a pretty forgiving car, slides are easily corrected. Until it snows, then I recommend a backup set of snow tires, an empty parking lot, and practice. That's all for now.

ren96-
thanks. awesome. i like the styling of the 95-96 a little better actually. i am only looking at SEs with ABS/VLSD with the 5 lug 16" rims.
yea i knew that the 240s had relatively good handling. i will definitely get the sway bars anyway. (awesome that it makes it oversteer a little more, and if it's forgiving that would just be badass) im planning to have it as a daily driver with some light mods and eventually put some heavy mods on it. we dont have snow here in austin, so that's not a problem.
i found a 96SE here that i am looking into with 63K miles.
oh, im 6'2", does the sunroof protrude so far as to reduce my headroom? i will go check that out when i test drive one.
thanks a lot,
Jefe
I've got an S13 so I'm biased towards it but I still think it's better. Unless you're doing SCCA-type racing you're missing out on the 4-wheel steering if you get an S14. For daily driving, I love my 92 LE. LSD and Super-HICAS make it probably the best handling car I would ever hope to own. whatever you pick, good luck. The S14 has a stonger (better pistons) engine and more comfy seats. The S13 feels sportier when driving (personal opin) and looks better. And honestly, what looks better? Plain-Jane 16" 5 star rims that look like they came from an MX-6 or nice polished aluminum 7-spoke 15" rims on the S13's? Man, you might as well buy some ugly Speedline rims and be done with it. http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif I know what I like better. EVERYONE has 5-star rims these days. Nothing special there. Also, you can get an S13 in Fastback form which kicks ass. S14's look too much like any other car on the street. There's my two cents http://forums.freshalloy.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif

If you're 6'2" good luck trying to squash in there with a sunroof. The sunroof is the type that slides or tilts. So that means it needs a little pocket to slide into (about 1-2". You can always get an aftermarket sunroof that slides then tilts, therefore not reducing headroom. Around here, you can get one of those pretty big too around $600 installed.
Oh yea hey, if you're sure you're getting an s14, make sure when you buy it you check the rear bumper. Stand about 5-7' away and at 45 degrees on the passenger side and make sure there's sunlight. For some oddball reason, mine and a couple of other people in my area that I've talked to with s14s (95-97, not limited to certain years) have a miscolored rear bumper.
My friends that had white 95 and 97's have a yellowish bumper, mine is blue and had a slight hint of green to it. No joke, and I'm not making it up, check it out if you get the chance.

I think that happens because they use a different paint on the plastic bumpers. They put in a flexing agent that keeps the paint from cracking if hit. This causes the paint on the metal to look different from the paint on the bumper.

If you get a 97-up, get the LE. It's the luxury model SE. Try to find one with a factory Limited Slip. It makes a lot of difference in turning and power output.

And then you'll have the most expensive optioned out 240SX there ever was (stock).
