Damn it man... bring it to Ron's house and let him do it... j/k! You do know where the belts are right? I don't remember that well since having my KA... but I think the shroud makes it a little difficult to do the tightening or see the belts for that matter.

Most of the Time. The 1st belt to make noise is the Alternator belt. As the Alternator has the most resistance to movement as it ages.
If your Belts have not been replaced within the last couple years or 45k miles, I would advise looking at the underside(that which rides on the pulleys) and see if there are any small cracks or breaks in the fiber. IF so, replace, so you do not end up on the side of the road with a dead battery OR even a smoked engine becuase of no cooling...

Give each belt a tug...they should be VERY tight. If you can pull them 1/4" then they need to be tightened. Usually there is a bolt on the alternator that adjusts it's position...loosen and pull away until tight, then tighten bolt. Same goes for each other belt. I can't remember where the adjustment bolts are on the KA though.

You loosen the bolt and then you can move the pulley. Just tightening or loosening the adjusting bolt won't take up any slack.

Invest in an FSM, even if you don't do your own work, at least you'll be more familiar with your own car. This (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/mdsdm/S14_KA24DE_belt_tension.jpg) is the applicable page from the 97 FSM.

Sorry if I gave a rather crude description on how to do it, what mdsdm is right.
I'm farely fuzzy when it comes to specifics on KA's...its been awhile since I've worked on one.
