I just made a deposit ($1000) for a G35 at my local Infiniti dealership. The salesman said he would fax me a paper that indicated a deposit was made. However, what was faxed to me was the Buyer's Order (with no indication that a deposit was made or that the deposit is refundable). Is there a "receipt" given to buyers who put down a deposit for a special order? Also, should the negotiation for the purchase price be made at the time of making the deposit or when the car actually comes in (in my case, in about 14 weeks). I went to Jim Coleman Infiniti in Bethesda, MD.
Thanks, in advance, for any input.

If pricing is available for the vehicle and options you want, there is no reason not to write up at least a worksheet with all of this spelled out. Obviously, if pricing is not yet available on a particular model this is not practical.
I can't speak for others but I know the store I work at has no reciept or document specifically for deposits - refundable or not. We just sort of wing it in those situations and create something on the fly.

The one vechicle that I ordered from the factory also required a deposit. I put the deposit on my credit card only after having all of the details (exactly what it was going to cost including TT&L) in writing and in my possesion. In the end, the dealer never charged the credit card, so I was okay. That is my suggestion, if you must do it, put in on a credit card to give yourself some protection after you see the bottom line in writing.
