Nissan Motor Co. will revive its old brand, Datsun, at a yet-to-be-decided time as it is an important asset, the major Japanese automaker's president, Carlos Ghosn, said Tuesday.
Datsun was adopted by various Nissan cars in the 1960s, especially those sold overseas, and became a popular brand particularly in the United States. Currently, Nissan uses the brand only for a pickup truck model.
Among other Japanese automakers, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. recently revived its old brand, Colt, for a new compact car model.
With regard to Japan's protracted economic slump under deflationary pressure, Ghosn, who is credited for Nissan's rapid revival from management difficulties, said Japan can maintain strong economic growth in the long run if it can make better use of its strengths such as ample assets, infrastructures and the high quality of laborers.
