View Full Version : FINALLY got to DRIVE the Murano!

My Wife and I each spent about 45 minutes behind the wheel of silver AWD SL on Sunday driving our local backroads and highway. The salesman was nice enough to let us strap our Son's carseat in the back and he fell asleep, so our test was as long as we wanted it to be.

First off, exterior styling is fantastic. I believe that this is simply a gorgeous vehicle. Whether it be a car, truck, SUV, whatever, it's exterior design is fantastic.

My initial walk-around impression last week was that the driver's area was cramped. While my view opinion changed slightly, I still believe this to be true.

After spending some time driving it, I believe that the guage pod is WAY too close to the steering wheel, almost uncomfortably so. It seems like it was almost an afterthought from the designers on how and where to place it. The sharp edges of the pod simply do not compliment (or even match) the rest of the vehicle.

The rest of the interior is nice, nothing really special or exciting though, IMO. The aluminum is a nice compliment to the rest of the interior. The controls were easy to reach and made sense very quickly. Unfortunately, the center pod butted up against my right leg because of my height. The dash is humungous. (sp?)

We drove a model with the charcoal interior and had the chance to sit in one with the cabernet (?) interior. With both, my Wife commented that she felt that the back seat area was "dark," that there was not a tremendous amount of light being let in. (both had sunroofs)

The overall ride and handling seemed pretty good. This is supposed to be an SUV, so I did not go into it thinking I was test driving a 911 Turbo. The performance of the CVT is underwhelming, as it probably should be. No harsh (or even noticable) shifts and fairly quiet. Under hard acceleration, the engine note sounded just like our Altima. Much to the chagrin of the saleman, I hit a couple potholes dead-center and it did not get rattled. I did hear a few creaks from the interior.

On the highway, the ride was quiet and quite comfortable. There is a nice view from up where you sit. Power was available immediately. You could drive the Murano with confidence on Atlanta highways. One oddity, the speedometer needle pinned itself at 60mph and refused to budge until I tapped on it a few times. Needless to say, that raised some quality control concerns for my Wife and I.

As is the norm for us, we try not to comment out loud during test drives so we can compare notes after we are done. We both came to almost the exact same conclusions:

1) It looks awesome on the outside
2) There were a few things that we both defined as items "we'd probably get used to." (like the overall interior design, the guage pod, darkness of the interior, depth of the dash)
3) In no way did it feel like we just stepped out of a near-$40,000 vehicle. ($37,885 + tax)

Perhaps it is because I wanted to like it so much, but overall I think I am a bit disappointed with the Murano. The styling is amazing, but as a driver you spend more time looking at the interior than the exterior and the interior just did not do it for us.

If we were looking at it from the $32,000 perspective maybe our opinion would be different. But from the $38,000 perspective...there were too many "we'd probably get used to its" than we had when buying our Altima...or my F150...or her Honda Civic EX...or my Sentra SE-R...etc.

Regarding the gauge pod, the story was it was designed to move with the steering column, ie. not fixed on dash board. Somehow, there are problems with the design so Nissan dropped moving part from production (kinda like the 7 spd. manual shift).

Interior not bright enough. It's because the greenhouse for 2nd row was greatly sacrificed by the exterior design. 2nd row outside view was also sacrificed. The privacy glass did not help, either.

Pricing, Nissan is either confused or is testing buyer limit. In their literature and dealer training, they always compare the Murano to Highlander and Pilot, never mentioned any luxury SUV. Yet, Murano's optional content and pricing made it into midsize luxury SUV territory, where the competitions are also much better than Highlander and Pilot. Did Nissan want this (competing w/ RX300/X5/MDX/XC90 and lose it edge) to happen? It seems Nissan wants consumer to pay the premium while (wisely) insisting the Murano is not in that class.

The price is the one thing that bothers me about this car....but if you're in Atlanta, like I am, keep an eye on the Carmax website. They have a dealership for Nissan in Greenville, SC....and so far their prices are well below MSRP....should I be telling the world that!!!!

Since I'll be driving most of the time alone in my car...I like the idea that the back is not so easy to see into. Hadn't thought of that before your post.

Nice, "herm-type" but very good 'educated consumer' review, Ownersite.

Funny how you can be SOLD, @ $32,000.00....shows that you and your views can in-fact, beeee bought!??? Which would mean that it was worth the $37,885.00 all along, though you folks wouldn't in your right mind, pay that, right??? Riiiight. i have read a lot of posts here that say the Murano is too expensive. but looking at the feature-set and uniqueness of this vehicle, i personally think it's a good deal!
i think that a fully-loaded Murano is a fitting competitor to the Lexus RX300 and Acura MDX. and one might just swing to the Lexus for its look and prestige, and to the MDX for its third-row seat. there are other factors to consider, such as reliability and resale value, but unfortunately there is not any data yet to determine this for the Murano.
quite frankly, the only difference i see between the Murano and Lexus/Acura is the luxury connotation. Lexus/Acura will have different-minded salesmen and a better waiting area (when your car is being serviced). plus, you get free roadside assistance and the like. maybe a fancy pen and keychain. which could be a big deal to some people. but feature-for-feature, you get more from the Murano. it all just boils down to taste. i personally love the styling on the Murano because it is unique and aggressive.
i just wonder... what if we stick an Infiniti badge to the EXACT SAME Murano? will people still complain about the price?
a base Murano with just a few options totally trumps the Highlander or Pilot and is an awesome deal. i agree that they should be looser with the option packages to get a Murano to more people at the right price and with only the options they want.
to those who are able to negotiate a good price for the Murano, good for you. i bought mine fully-loaded (with nav) at MSRP, but got $500 in "benefits" and another $500 more with my trade-in. it was a silver/charcoal SL AWD. i've had it for a week and a half now and it's just awesome. people i meet say the car is gorgeous. i can't comment on performance yet as it is still in the break-in period (<1000 mi) but i can feel the power... the brakes are strong. while the dash is indeed expansive, i did not have any problems with it, unlike in the VW New Beetle (maybe it's because the hood drops quickly and sharply). the rear quarter is a blind spot but the side mirrors compensate adequately.

Just drove an SL in Buffalo in the rain! It is everything I expected it to be.

Great exterior

Acceptable interior (gauge pod is smaller than I expected and yes it is stationary ... the one in my G35 moves which allows me to see the gauges for the first time in my life.

I liked the Nav with "information" included .... different than my G35.

Space is good for me .... 6'4''

CVT not as different as I expected

I liked the way it handled .... hate to say it was simular to the Highlander ..... acceeleration a little disappointing.

Definitly the competion is also the XC90, MDX, RX300, BMW X5. If you are going to pay close to $40,000 must look at other cars in the same price range .... lack of luxury badge will hurt sales .... I can overlook this.

Conclusion: It will be a "hard sell" to convince my wife to buy a Nissan to replace her Volvo V70 T5 instead of a Volvo (safety), Lexus (name) I'll probably succed .... wish the Infinity FX35 was available .... maybe I'll wait. I love my G35 and the FX35 will be more like the G35. http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif
