or perhaps, the per RPM torque output/curve as a better indicator than peak numbers.

You beat me to it ExhaustNote. Too many people here are whining about the V8 only making ~35 HP more than the V6. What they don't understand is that rating is only at a SINGLE POINT IN THE RPM RANGE! As torquey as people think the VQ is, there are quite a few engines out there that have flatter and broader torque curves. Don't get me wrong, the VQ is a great engine, but it's not the end all be all to engines. The VK in this instance, I would bet, has a much broader power band, which you're going to feel substantially over the VQ. If you were to look at the dyno results from both these engines, the VK will probably have significant advantages over the VQ all over the RPM range. Moreso than what the "peak" numbers are indicating. I think one needs to look under the surface a little more here to see the real story.

i agree with you Eric, people are making too big of a deal between the 35 and the 45.... the way i see it, either VQ or VK, you can't go wrong! http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif i myself would go with the 45 just so i could say... 4.5 V8 http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

400 cc isn't much and assuming optimum design and tuning 75x0.400=30lb/ft../HP at same rpm at best!
Obviously the 4100 wasn't optimized for anything but gas mileage and lower cost of production than either the old 90-96 4.5 or the newer lighter duty 4.5!

Only 320 HP??? What happened to the other 30hp I though it would have the same HP as the Q45 and M45 since it's on the same chassiss and shares the 4.5lt V8... http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif

theres gonna be a a whole lot more torque than the Q45 and M45 configuration of the 4.5 liter engine.. you need more torque for SUV's for hauling..

Torque at its peak is directed related to displacement and piston diameter primarily [you can cheat by having a longer than optimum stroke] but then revablity and longevity suffers [like most domestic engines].
