I have had the pleasure of owning the superb 2002 Acura TL Type S and after reading a number of reviews of the 2004 Maxima, it would appear that Nissan has finally developed a very competitive model.

Competitive to what? The TL-S? Right... http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/smirk.gif

What about '04 TL-S? Current TL-S is nice, but it's not fare. Since you compare next gen. Maxima, you should include next gen. TL-S. I know that there is not much info. on it, but it's gonna be much more upscale and powerful.

Nissan has FINALLY developed a very competitive model???

The 02 was competition enough especially with it's six-speed manual. Let alone the 04.

I'm sorry, other than the rocket ship looking A on the front, what made the TL something that couldn't be compared to the Maxima?

I dont get it. Why are u all saying that maxima can't be compared to TL-S? IMO new maxima is better than 5th gen. in about every way(looks are subjective, which i dont mind).

-5 more horses
-way more torque(forgot the #'s on TLS')
-Much better interior, compared to boring TLS',(i've sat in 04 max)
-Skyroof
-dont know about accelaration yet, gotta see some timeslips from the track.
-18" rims 245 tires
-elite package
etc.

Oh, I forgot that the maxima has that ugly tooth so dont compare it to such a superb TLS.

The TL has a very plain exterior, except for the front.
The interior is a little bland and cheap looking, IMO.

I heard that the next TL will increase in price quite a bit. Remember the first generation TL's pricing was a good $5k higher than it is now.

http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif I don't think I'm fully following the logic of your views, but what I was saying in my last post was that not only is the 04 Max a competitive model, so were the previous years. 'richard' commented that Nissan had finally had a competitive model with the 04. I responded only questioning the finally part.

Let's compare '04 Maxima to '97 TL, then Maxima will be even better. Come on, if you compare cars, compare them of the same year.

About interior, I think that '04 Maxima's interior is like out-of-space. Huge flat panel with nothing on it and then many tiny buttons on the top. I wish they stuck with interior similar to Audi’s or TL’s. Different doesn't automatically mean better.

Man...from the looks of this thread you'd of thought we were at www.acura-tl.com (http://www.acura-tl.com)!

The crazy thing is that most of us have grown to love each previous generation of the Maxima and I believe that will continue to happen with the 6th gen Maxima too.

My bad, i got u wrong Nissan_Man. Thought u were saying that the 04' is no competion to TL-S.
NissT the topic started with comparison of an '04 max vs '02 TL-S, and not '97. At this time u can't compare '04 TL anyway cuz it's not out yet.

If I am not mistaken, similar equipped Acura TL-S is actually not that much more $$$ than the new Maxima. (deep discount right now) If it was my money, I'd put it on the Acura. The only thing I worry about is the transmission. I really can't get used to the exterior styling of the Maxima. Looks like an elephant that's trying to look aerodynamic.

Actually, if I had my choice, I'd buy an Altima for value, a G35 sedan for fun & performance. I would even get an Accord sedan over the Maxima because of the looks. http://forums.freshalloy.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif Neither Maxima nor TLS are very competitive on the market right now.

Well, this goes to show how subjective styling is....getting an accord (ugly IMO) over an '04 Maxima based on looks.

anyway, all the Maxima-bashing have been based on looks alone. I think it's going to do very well. Looking at the review on Autoweek it is a very capable car.

Why would anyone buy a car such as the Acura if they are
going to have doubts about the transmission? I know I
wouldnt by a car if I had any doubts about it, especially
for this kind of money.

Well, I love my Acura TLS. I am/was/not decided-in the market for a 03-04 Maxima. I miss shifting my own gears. Test drove about 4 different SEs. But there are so many on the road here in DC. And I like the look of my Ack! And especially the praise I get from the ladies and the homies, but doesn't draw attention from the troopers when I am haulin. Besides, I want my next ride to be my last for a long while. After seeing the 2004, I think I will wait and save up for a Lexus GS400-430 or a Audi A6-8. But in all fairness, I do miss my 95 SE 5 speed. The best Maxima ever made.
P.S. Now if my transmission go out a 3rd time. There is a 03 Maxima with my name on it.

The 2004 TL will be redesigned and you'll bet your NSX that Acura will fix the tranny problem by then.

Premature to compare Maxima against the TL until Honda-Acura brings out the new model specs and pics.

"Captin, I need confirmation that we are still on a Nissan board"

You Honda guys are smoking something nice. I'm glad you all finally realized that Nissan is the better brand and are jumping on the bandwagon but all that you see now didn't happen overnight.

Maxima has always been a competitve model if not better in some cases. Remember the 2000 Max? There ws no Type-S and Maxima had 222hp and 217lb of torque which was more then the TLs torque if I am correct. The interiors were equal. TL cost more though. On a side note please go inside a Nissan before you judge it's interior, I know some of you guys have not been inside the Nissans you complain so much about. I have been in TL and the interior does not have anything over the Maxima. The Maxima acutally look more contemporary the TL which looks dated IMO but interior materials are up to par for both cars. Continuing on in 2001 the Anniversary Edition got 227hp, the car now has more HP nd Torque than a TL. In 2002 TL-S came out with 260hp and 232lb of torque. In 2002 the Maxima was updated with 255hp (which was suppose to be 260) and 246lb of torque. Both cars had their strong points but Maxima had two advantages, price and a 6 speed manual. If I'm correct TL only has a 5 speed Auto. For someone looking for all the performance they can get from a FWD car which car makes more sense? Thats right the Maxima. Thankyou for your time.

Keep dreaming. Until Nissan realize the truth that they need to be loyal to its customers, it'll never be a better brand. Only fools would buy cars by comparing base price, peak torque, and peak horsepower.

Loyalty has nothing to do with which car is better.
I like Nissan cars better than any Toyota or Honda,
thats why Ill always buy the Nissan. I dont like the
Nissan dealers either, but it doesnt keep me from being
a loyal Nissan fan, or buying one. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif
