View Full Version : F32 Leopard (Infiniti J30) JDM engine options...?

I know the F32 Leopard was offered with a V8 in Japan, but I'm not sure which it was. Was it the VH45, or VH41, or something else...?

I might be picking up a J30 soon and was wondering what my options were. I know the VG30DETT goes in with relatively little work (it already has the VG30DE), but was wondering what other choices there were. Any input appreciated.

Just go with a VG30DETT, a RB would be nicer IMO, but I dont kno if it will fit, try it tho if you got $$$$ to spend http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif i think the chassis code for J30 is Y32, correct me if I'm wrong, that is what I saw in my engine bay tho, maybe tomorow I will look again. Keep us posted on your project tho. Also there is a thread about the M30 and its potential, so if you dont want a sedan maybe try it out? http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

from what i can tell (at least in japan), the J30s had a base chassis designation of Y32 for the earlier (MY 94-96 in japan) models and Y33 for those thereafter. there were different permutations depending on engine options...HFY33, FGDY33, etc...

The Y32s came with VG30DETs, while the later Y33s had VQ30DETs-both with single turbos. Optional on the Y33 generation cars was the VH41DE. I would believe that it wouldn't be too difficult to acquire a whole VH41 leopard front clip and swap that in. that's probably the only almost guaranteed way to get everything to fit. Oh yah, the VH41s that came in the Y33 leopards is akin to the earlier-generation USDM VH45 that came in the first-gen Q45s. accesories seem to be in the same position, so a brave soul can prob try and swap in a usdm engine from an early Q, and it might just work (electricals, notwithstanding...that's another story).

can anyone with a J30 please tell me what kind of front suspension it uses...whether it's a mcpherson strut-type or a multi-link type? and also, can you measure and/or take a picture of the distance between the front of the engine block and the radiator?

THINK
EDIT: oh yah, this is the best J30-related web resource i've been able to find so far:

Thanks for the corrections on Chassis code...I had assumed F32 as a progression from the F31 Leopard. Was there also a Cedric and Gloria in the Y32 generation? What was the Chassis for the first Cima/preisdent)? I knew the Y33 encompassed the Cedric, Gloria, and Cima (our 2nd Generation Q), but not a fourth car as well. And people call Nissan US unoriginal for using only a few engines...

You're right, the Y32 and Y33 chassis codes appear to have been used on several cars, including the cima, and cedric/gloria. the chassis for the president was something like F45 or something to that effect. actually, i gotta admit, this is where nissan gets confusing, with the chassis code enumeration. i just found out last nite that the HFY33 that i noted before is in fact the code for the Y33 cima (our '97-01 Q45) with VH41DE. check out that web site i posted tho...some interesting info there

Why not rip out the VG30DE, and go with *gasp* a SR20DET... lol... 4 door Nissan Drift car...

What would be more fun is some one is able to bring up from South America, the LHD A31 Nissan Cefiro... The ones that sold in mainland China were interestingly LHD, and powered with the venerable KA24DE...

actually TY, that was one of the initial ideas! bearing in mind that most of the nissan rwd chassis' front xmembers are interchangable between car models, i was thinking that an sr20 with a big turbo would be quite nice in a j30. thing is, you gotta consider that the j30 is technically a luxury car, and that swapping in an engine that was never avl for it in any market might compromise your ability to retain things like the climate control, etc... i mean, anything can be made to work with some research, but it might not be worth it sometimes. now, imagine a gutted j30 with a full cage and a built sr20det in it... THAT would be interesting, eh?

I love my leather too much to do that!!! But it'd still be cool to see someone who did that, reminds me of the toyota chaser that was drifting at the drift showoff in irwindale a week ago.

exactly my thoughts... the j30 is the closest the US ever got to a cefiro imo... a mid-size rwd nissan sedan (not counting the too-new g35). with an all-gutted interior, and a turbo engine with a manual tranny, and full coilovers, it would make for an interesting track/drift car. it'll be like a slammed jellybean running around.

Wasn't the Gloria also Y32 chasis?

I have a 1995 Infiniti J30 that i love. I was wondering though, is there a way to put the twin turbos from a 300zx on my car, the intercooler and all the piping like exhaust and intake? And does the 300zx twin turbo manual transmission fit and bolt on to the J30's engine. Or if i decide to get really nuts, will the Q45 engine fit? and could i twin turbo that if i could find the exhaust manifold to fit. If you could help me out here that would be much apprciated. Thanks to all that help.
