th3 element is the definition of a double standard, its as ugly as any of the ugly body cladded gms i've seen, yet being a honda and reliable somehow makes it ok.

Just because it has Honda interior bits does not excuse it. I think I'd rather have an Elantra or a Tiburon than a Honda box. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Well fortunately for Honda, the people buying cars aren't listening.
I think it has less to do with the Element being a Honda and more with it just being a very versatile, roomy vehicle with good mileage and a very low price. I mean, broken down to the basics, the waterproof floor, the ridiculous amount of headroom and legroom, and the $16K MSRP sell itself. The Honda badge on the front just gives the buyer added insurance that the low price doesn't mean Hyundai Excel quality.
That said, if I needed a hauler, I'd consider the Element. The exterior style issue shouldn't be an issue. We've all purchased Japanese cars and know boring/ugly cars don't mean that much.

Nothing out recently from any of the major Japanese automakers has been THIS boring/ugly/laaaaame. I mean, put a Saturn badge and cheapen the interior up a bit, and I'd think it was a Saturn.

But the Element doesn't have any plastic body cladding. It has plastic fenders.

I respect Honda for their achievements, but lately, they have been kind of "lazy" first the the "redesign" of the Accord and then with the "Element." They can do better, the just aren't trying right now. Why? playing to the conservative and boring folks?. why!?.
They can do better, the element is just not the good first step of wild designs.

I'll give you boring and ugly, but how is it lame? Except for some unfortunate sheetmetal (which can very easily be remedied in the aftermarket or by Honda itself. see: Honda Studio E Concept) the Element is still an amazing cargo hauler. It provides the more room for the driver and passengers than a lot of other cars in and out of it's price range. And the engine/shifter/interior are all awesome.

Troopa, unlike you, I don't give Honda a free pass on everything.

I don't give Honda a free pass on anything. I give it credit where it's due. And 6000 people in February apparently felt the benefits of the Element outweighed the sheetmetal.
You still haven't explained why the Element is lame.

And I don't intend to. It's self-evident. Park one next to a CR-V and a Prelude, then get back to me. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smirk.gif http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Okay, so it's not a mommy-mobile or a sports car. That's why it's lame? Honestly, if MTX isn't gonna back up his own argument, can someone else explain how the Element is lame?
