View Full Version : Frontier SE-R
We all know that Nissan has a good and powerful sport cars but wouldn't it be nice if Nissan offer a sport (street) version of Frontier and call it like Frontier SE-R. Probably QV35DE engine making over 250 hp. Some think that would compete with the Dodge Decota R/T or Ford F-150 Lighting. They could even add supercharger later for people who need it.

That would be cool. And not to bust your bubble but Dodge spells it Dakota.
I was going to do SR20DET engine swap but VQ35DE would be even a better swap. They both make the same HP except the VQ35DE would have a lot more torque. I wander if I could use the same equipment that I have on my truck like transmission and etc.
My truck would probably be as close as my dream Frontier SE-R if I go with engine swap. By the way here is a link to my web site. http://geocities.com/nebat1/frontier.html
Then I have to install disk breaks all around with ABS controlled. That would be a dream.
See now why I want Nissan to make Frontier SE-R so people like me do not have to go through hell getting parts for there trucks.

That would be a great idea, but Nissan has already said that it is impossible to fit the VQ35DE into the current Frontier's engine bay, it is too wide.

Why don't you just turbo your ka24de engine. It would be a lot cheaper than trying to stuff a vq or sr engine in there. Plus you get the added torque of the big 2.4.

i wondered that myself zbeast
people get good results turboing the KA in the 240sx. i'm wondering if you could do the same thing to a frontier

how are the ka24de internals in your frontier different than the 240's?
When I opened the hood of my friends frontier I noticed one thing room and vasts amounts of it. I think that a turbo kit used for the 240 would fit easily in there. If the turbo headers off of a 240 kit fit, I dont think you would have any problems. It might even be easier given the amount of extra space you get with the 4cyl frontier.(although I could be wrong)
A turbo kit from a 240 or a custom job would still be cheaper than trying to stuff the Vq or sr20det in.(even at $4k) And if you do get a sr20det engine put in, it might be kinda hard or exspensive to try to replace parts.
Good luck, and please keep us posted on any progress you make.

there's a lot of empty space in the frontier's engine bay. a turbo should easily fit. but if you still wanna swap, i think you should do a V8 instead of SR20DET. people stuffed V8's into the old hardbody so you should be able to do it in a frontier. by the way, can you post some pics of your truck?
Nobody makes a turbo kit for Frontier. Even if I use 240's turbo I still have to get someone custom fit into my truck which will cost over $4000. The biggest problem is will it work with my truck, even though the engine looks the same from the out side it is different from inside. That is why I wanted to do engine swap, however if I could turbo ka engine I would do it.
By the way does anyone know if 240 headers fit on Frontier?
Here is a link to my Web site: http://www.geocities.com/nebat1/welcome.html
my truck is the on that says Frontier SE-R.
SE20DET engine cost around $2K all the components then it would cost another $1500 to $2K to custom fit it. So it would cost around $4K. However, turbo kit cost around $3500 then costom fitting it would cost around $1K to $2K, if I am not mistaken.
I wanted to keep my truck all Nissan inside and out.
Difference between 240sx and Frontier engine:
1. 240sx is fuel injection and Frontier is tradulbody.
2. Last time when I asked my dealer, they told me the Cam are different on both engines and used different components inside the engine. Next time when I go back I will ask for more detail.

nice truck.
you could still do a V8 swap and stay nissan, you'd have to somehow get ahold of the VH41 or VH45 from the Q45. or a ZH series but those are spankin' new engines.
a turbo could still be a good option. i imagine it'd be less work than completely swapping engines and transmissions
Yesterday I called my dealer and asked how much it would cost for the VQ35DE engine and if it does work with my transmission. They told me it cost $6400 for a new engine and would have to buy the transmission also and it costs $2900. I can't even imagine how much the VH or ZH engine and transmission would cost.
You are right turboing my engine would be less hassle and cheap. I think I might do that. I guess my next question would be will the 240sx turbo kit work on my truck? Any body?

yeah, you're right. a VH series would probably set you back quite a bit of dough.
unless of course you could get a rebuilt or used one
if not, a turbo would be a good idea. you could ask the guys over in the 240SX forum to see if they know whether a turbo kit can be done to the Frontier's KA24.
