With the CL and CLK already in showrooms, does Mercedes really need another big coupé? The company's top brass clearly think so, and the new model will make its debut at September's Frankfurt Motor Show.
Based on the E-Class saloon and called the CLS, it will share both its wheelbase and engines with its sibling. Even though there are four doors, the sloping rear end marks it out as a coupé - as does the CL section of its name and the huge grille badge.
The raked rear will echo that of the GST concept car, while the front end will feature narrower single headlamps than the saloon, a lower roof and a more angular bonnet line.
In order to further distinguish it from the E-Class saloon, the CLS will boast a profile similar to that of the CLK. Blacked-out B-pillars will give the appearance of an uninterrupted window line, while the door frames will be made as slim as possible so as not to detract from the sleek side view. The model will only be offered in Mercedes' two top trim levels, Elegance and Avantgarde. Both will have a leather interior, split-level climate control, adaptive cruise control, air-suspension and Mercedes' award-winning Pre-Safe accident-prevention system. The Avantgarde will also get xenon headlamps, COMAND sat-nav and the S-Class's voice-activated communications set-up. Engine choice will consist of two petrol V6 units and a V8, plus a pair of diesels. The entry-level car will use a 231bhp 3.0-litre V6, while a 258bhp 3.5 V6 and 326bhp 5.0 V8 will also be offered. The base oil-burner will get the E320 CDI's 204bhp 3.2-litre motor.
But the big news will be the debut of Mercedes' all-new 4.0-litre V8 diesel unit in the CLS 400 CDI. The new 252bhp engine will eventually go on to power the E-Class and S-Class. It will also be available with a four-wheel-drive option, which could be ad- opted across the E-Class range if it proves popular with buyers.
Performance fans will excited by the forthcoming CLS 55 AMG, on sale within a year of the standard car. But that's not all, because insiders suggest that Mercedes is also preparing a brand new 6.3-litre V12 powerplant producing up to 600bhp, which would make its debut in a CLS 65 AMG. The CLS should hit UK dealers by spring 2005, with prices starting at around £60,000. Interestingly, Audi has dropped plans to build a similar four-door coupé version of the A4.

Looks like Chris Bangle finally got M-B designers to meet his crack dealer.
