On page 57 of the September/October PONTIAC ENTHSIAST magazine writer Jim Wangers says " Want data? Try zero to 60 in five seconds flat. How about the quarter-mile in the low 12s, in showroom trim? If you can manage the wheelspin, those times are for real. "

i doubt it, would need more power than the z06 for low 12's at its weight. low 13's would be great but even that is a stretch at this point unless gm did something

The GTO is crap. That isn't a GTO...GM has forgotten what the orignal goat was. They need to stop rebadging cars and giving it a differnt name. Those are the tactics of drug dealers.

Philisophically speaking...I'd much rather have this GTO than the old one. The older GTO badge had too much in the way of scoops and non-functional gimmickry.
And how is it so different? The Monaro, which this car is based off of, has a sedan version, does it not? I mean, geez, its got four seats and a large engine...what else do you need?
The GTO will probably sell very well when it first hits the market....but I wonder if it will go the way of the new Thunderbird. Of course, the Thunderbird never even pretended to be anything other than a cruiser, and there were huge dealer markups at first...

Low 13's seem more realistic. I'm not sure what to think about the Monaro. I've never seen it in person so I couldn't tell. I can say its a better retro attempt than other cars I've seen in the fact that all they're reviving is the name and they're not tryign to make the car look like the older model to invoke a feeling of nostalgia. If I want an old T-Bird then I'll restore one. the old ones are better anyway.

Most of the primary buyers (F&F kids) IMHO probably don't know what a GTO is (well, except it was in xXx). The percentage that does, some won't buy it because "it's not a GTO", many will, because there is no other new LS V-8 aside from the Corvette.
Those who thought about getting an F-body for the power but didn't because of the rest of the car will probably get the GTO (unless they got something else...)

The XLR has a LS-1 and the F-Body is dead.

Maybe I missed something here, but the XLR has a Northstar. GTO has the LS1.

Crap...Oh, I was thinking of the CTS-V. And I remembered the caddy was supposed to have the LS-1, so i just threw it in there. Sorry...premature posting.

My fault. My fav car the CTS-V does have a LS V-8.
I was thinking which would come first in production but that's up in the air.

Speaking of the GTO, go to Pontiac's website and on the left, click GTO. When the window pops up, go to the bottom on the left side and click "hear it coming" to listen to a clip of the engine revving and a clip of the engine being started.
It sounds pretty damn good. Surprising that it's coming fron an LS1. I've heard some pretty good exhaust systems on LS1's (having worked at a couple of Chevrolet dealerships in the past), but this GTO just sounds brutal. The clip of the car starting up, it sounds like it's going to breathe fire.
God I hope they took those clips from a production model.

Damn.
True dual exhaust?
Wish they coulda make it dual corner outlet, not dual one-side. Looks like it's got pretty huge mufflers to enhance the sound. I prefer "raw" than deep.
I wonder if it's H-piped. It's not X-piped for sure.

Wait i got it now, I was going on the path of the XLR and Vette sharing platforms...which, led me to thinking the XLR had an LS-1...as for the CTS-V, I should know better. Just not my day. Its nice to have a fellow chevy afficianado around to correct me when I get out of hand in times like this. Thanks. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well I can find, and have found, a way to like almost any manufacturer. I'm only 22 and only live once, so I'm not going to limit myself to one brand my entire life. But yeah http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif I just happen to know more about GM stuff than I do about other stuff at the moment. And no problem on the chevy thing. In relation to the CTS-V I'm just glad people aren't bashing it left and right and sideways for having a "mere pushrod." Maybe it's where and how the car was engineered (Nurburgring), maybe it's that it at least has a DOHC bells-&-whistles engine in the regular models, maybe it's the sheer 400hp, I dunno.
@ Irie Eyes: I don't know if you saw or not, but on that same pop up window for the GTO from the Pontiac site, you can go to the gallery section and see a complete undercarriage shot of the car, showing everything from stem to stern and side to side. It's a nice clean shot of how the exhaust is set up. It does really look to be true dual exhaust, as I couldn't find any connecting pipes of any kind linking the two seperate exhaust routes (though, maybe I didn't look close enough). Which is amazing considering how good the exhaust sounds.

Actually the website says it's a true dual exhaust.
But seems like like H-pipe or X-pipe yields more gains.

I like that...Chevy afficianado.

Its not a real GTO? People are funny. It'll sell out in no time. THe T-Bird was overpriced, underperformed, and is fugly as hell. THe new GTO looks bad ass and with the Solstice on the way, Pontiac might FINALLY be getting some drving excitement.

Low 12s is kinda too quick for me for it's introduction year, and being IRSed.
The Australians say "0-60mph around 6.0 secs, 14.2 sec 1/4 mile. 400hp LS1 version gets around 13.5 sec 1/4 mile and 0-60mph in 5.6 secs, aftermarket 450hp versions do a 13sec 1/4 mile."
"Based on his years of testing and being behind the wheel of much muscle, Wangers felt that with a practiced foot and a stickier tire the car he drove could run a 0-60 MPH in the low 5 second range and is capable of dipping into the high 12s at maybe 107 MPH in the 1/4 mile. And with slicks?"
