The Hummer brand may be getting a bit nicer - at least that's the message General Motors Corp., which owns the rights to develop and sell Hummer consumer vehicles, will be sending next month as it unveils its next Hummer concept, a small pickup dubbed H3T, at the 2004 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. The show opens to media on January 2 in Los Angeles and General Motors will use the show to present its heftiest brand's future direction, as seen through the lens of a scaled-down concept. Although just a concept, Ed Welburn, General Motors North American vice president of design, says the H3T represents a "youthful, smaller, more affordable" direction than today's Hummer. Clay Dean, design director for Hummer, describes the brand's next step even more aggressively, saying the H3T is "a little more environmentally responsible" than what the brand is known for. Unlike Hummer's current vehicle lineup, which includes the Hummer H1 originally built for the military, and its smaller counterpart H2, the H3T - unveiled to media Tuesday - is built on a compact pickup truck frame, is drastically smaller, sports an in-line-five turbocharged engine with 350 hp and, as a result, could get upwards of 22 miles per gallon, according to General Motors officials.

No joke!
I suppose it is built on the new Colorado chassis? Its probably using the same I5 in that truck, too (albeit with a turbo).
Are those little doors on the sides of the pickup bed behind the front doors? Interesting. I can see it selling very well, depending on pricing....Its very 'Jeep Wrangler'.

...because what I REALLY want to do with my huge 4wd pickup is rev it to 3k, just to get the turbo to spool.
stupid.

Why is it so imperative to cheapen the image of a brand and destroy its soul? Okay, so despite the crappy gas mileage and all (cuz I'm oh-so environmentally concerned http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/rolleyes1.gif) the H2 and impending H2 SUT are pretty sweet mini-Hummers. I can live with building a $50K+ Hummer. It strengthens the brand buy pulling in still affluent people that don't have to necessarily be eight-hundred-thousandaires to buy their vehicle. Great. But why do we need a (I'm guessing) $25-30K PICK-UP TRUCK? Are the Colorado and GMC "Some other state that means 'rugged' so it's our name" not muscle-y enough?
I like a little exclusivity. I liked the idea that if I got to the day I could buy a brand new Benz, or a two year old Humvee, I could feel proud of the accomplishment. Is someone trying to tell me that Hummer's problem is that they don't sell a mid-20's pick-up truck? Is someone going to convince me that the C230 coupe, 1-series Bimmer, or A3 is the savior of these companies? Gimme a break.

Whatever. LOOK AT THOSE HUGE TIRES. This truck is OBVIOUSLY superior to any other domestic offering.
And you remember thanksgiving 1991, right? Our President, George Bush, ate thanksgiving dinner on the hood of a Hummer. This is the same company!
One of my friends was talking about buying a Mazda pickup, but I convinced him to get a Ford Ranger, instead. They're built so much better.

hummer isn't a prestigous brand, its a military brand so i don't see how adding an h20 would effect it. people somehow got it in their head that an h1 costs a 100k so its bling bling rap video yoyo. the only thing that i think gm should have stayed true to is the capabilities of the h1, but they already threw those out the window on the h2. an h3 will probably be better than the h2 offroad but i doubt it will be a 'rubicon' offroad.

Who said the Humvee was prestigious? I said it took someone who was affluent to buy one. If you see someone driving an H1, the first thing you think is, "I bet his gas mileage sucks," but the second thing you think is, "That guy has some cake." The brand had an air of affluence attached to it which it will continue to loose with the development of this truck. Heck it's not even an SUT! http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/rolleyes1.gif

so now after knowing theres an h3, when you see someone driving an h1 you're all of a sudden going to think, that guy doesn't have any money, i just saw an h3 pickup for 20k. i don't agree with the elitest attitude and the only thoughts i have when i see an h1 on the road are purely negative ones, especially when the thing can't even fit in one lane.

Where does it say it has to rev up to 3k rpm to make boost? Those motors naturally aspirated make a lot of torque down low. With a turbo they can easily tune it to be a torque monster.

a turbocharged motor can easily make torque and power down low, its all in the turbocharger selection and compression ratios among other things
ya know, even ford knew better than to try to market a mustang 3 back in the 70s......

No, you miss my point totally. Look at Ferrari and Lamborghini. They could each pump out mass produced $35K sports cars to generate more profits and sales. But honestly, would people have the same reverence and love affair with the brand?
I don't come from money, nor do I have a whole lot of it now, so I don't have an elitist attitude nor is it what I aspire to. But to me (note: not necessarily everone, but TO ME) the mystique/cool factor/exclusivity/charm/whatever you want to call it, disappears when the brand starts making vehicles that don't fit their makeup. The same people that don't know a Maxima from an I35 now will see an H1 and say, "whatever, that same company makes a $20K sh!tbox." Sorry but I like that not everyone can own a Ferrari. It makes seeing even a Modena a neat experience. The same goes for the H1.

H1 owners are probably peeved, slightly, about the H2. {understatement of the week?}
Can't step out around here without having to watch your behind from getting run over by another H2!

i would love to own an H1 because of its eye catching size on the raod and capability offroad, just can't afford one. i think H2 and H3T have the same status as a porsche cayenne, yuppie mobile. most won't even see a gravel driveway in there life time and will be wash every week. if you really want offroad capability and can't afford and H1, save some money and buy and jeep.
