That's a real cool idea. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I love Volkswagens too, well, older ones anyway...
Putting both Nissan and VW together is just too awesome!

I wonder how hard it would be to put a SR20 into a Fastback, now that'd be sick!
There wouldn't be any need to worry about smog laws here in Cali either http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yeah, we were expecting this type of reaction, but we got a worse reaction from the VW purists who couldn't believe that we'd desecrate their beloved German vehicle with a Japanese engine. When we were trying to gather information on creating the axles we needed strong enough to hold up to the power the engine was capable of, some of the VW gurus we talked to got very offended with us.

When we started this project, I'd admit that I'd been guilty of being a purist too, but after seeing the amount of work that has gone into this car you get a real respect for a project like this. In the end, some people will love this, some people will hate this, and some just won't care. The challenge of trying something different, no matter the results, is always worth the experience.

Yes, we do. I thought I posted that pic, but I didnt so here it is. The secret is on the driver's side, at the end of the grille. The corner light has been removed and a scoop has been molded (using a s13 sidemount plastic scoop and a heatgun http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) into the opening and directs flow up into the intercooler. There will be vents, or louvers in the hood to allow it to flow thru.

once the hood is vented, it should be okay.. we have thought of adding a fan though.

He has already planned to get the tranny cryo'd before we turn up the boost

I'd put a fan on that intercooler. Maybe pushing from underneath?

Very cool setup you have there.

I'm not a purist... but I am very biased towards the SR20DET. I would like to put it in so many cars you don't even know...

Thats a pretty sick swap! Forget the "purists", afraid of change, afraid that what they know and love is being challenged. CA18DETs into AE86, SR20DET into an FD, Chevy V8 in Datsun 240Z, SR20DET into BMW 318i....ect. Remember one of the greatest race cars of all time? The AC Cobra. An American engine in a British car! Think what the "purists" said about that.
I daydream about a 20B three rotor in my S14.....yummmmy rotary madness.
Keep us posted on the project.

hmm.. if I had swapped them.. lets see..Napa, Autozone..Advance Autoparts.. simple 30mm tap in plug. No big deal. No, this is an entirely bone stock 54c GTiR motor. But yea, as always, your "keen" eye picked out the spray paint. I coulda went all the way and just had him paint them gold. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I hate to have to break it to you but it wont look sock with that grill as it only came on 90-92 GTIs...
Your gti had a different grill stock... the grill that is on there now came from a completely different body style

this is what your grill should have looked like stock http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

yes, we are well aware of that. In fact we have the 90-92 Round light grille zip-tied on in that pic. We have the factory grille and the upgrade to the Hella's in the middle of it too. I think "stock" in this context was a little different meaning.. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There have been some questions about the rest of the car.. so here is a list of the mods.
Suspension will be fully capable..Tokico Illuminas all around with (Neuspeed?) coilovers. Front and rear sway bar upgrades, Neuspeed front upper strut bar..unknown rear strut bar, front camber plates, tie rods designed to adjust on both sides of the steering rack and to work with Mk2 VW steering knuckles. Momo Lakes driver's seat and Momo 4 pt harness. Currently running 14" VW teardrops polished with 195/60/14 Yok AVS-i's.

The majority of the equipment was on the car when the owner bought it third-hand. Along with it is a VW 1.8L motor, decked head, cam, neuspeed cam gear and header, neuspeed throttle body, upgraded CIS injection and MAS and I believe an LSD tranny. Car was fun like that, but only at much lower speeds than it will be capable of now. With the VW mill it was a nice sprint, but a long struggle to 100mph.

I understand what you're saying because the grille does have the red line around it, but what about the Cabriolet? That was an A1 chassis and had dual rounds towards the end of it's production and it isn't an uncommon mod for a still-stock motor rabbit in the VW community (those guys love lighting). Dual round headlights, although a little more agressive than the squares, would not tip me off to an SR20DET under the hood. If anything I'd think it was a Cabriolet or a Mk2 GTI (still nothing to worry about http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

But to keep it on-Nissan-topic, at least:

This car will be amazing with the SR (if it's anything like my friend's NX2000). I expect a lot of hater purists talking smack on this project. That's the way it was when my friend was talking about putting a v-tec motor in his car. It's almost as bad as rotary purists. But hey, if it works well, why not?

What made you pick the SR20DET over the VW 1.8T motor? Cost of the motorset would be my first guess and then simplicity of converting would be my second. The SR has a cable throttle as opposed to the drive by wire throttle on the 1.8T. But how are you handling the hydraulic clutch? Using a pedal assembly from an 02A equipped car? How about the cluster? The Rabbit has a cable speedo. Which cluster are you going to use?

steve shadows
12-22-2003, 10:44 AM
the drive by wire system is hell to work with and the electronics and tuning of the 1.8t in the recent forms is also a pain in the azz and i have worked on 1.8t audis and they are a living hell to work on in terms of ecu going nuts with any tuning and the cost of getting the setup working for a 1.8t and being fast would prolly be a lot more in the long run. the sr parts are easy to get and fwd sr parts have low demand and are cheaper...

nice setup once again, i like the sr motor in the way it drives also, not quite as smooth but defintitely more noticable torque range and slightly more displacement.

Around here I find this forum is generally strict on some rules and loose on others. This is one I don't mind them being loose on.

Yeah, alot of VW people are ghey, especially vortexers. I was actually thinking of putting a DET into a Cabriolet after seeing a B18 swapped Rabbit.

I wonder too, but aren't B13s cable clutch? The 02A pedal cluster doesn't exactly bolt an A1 car, A1s are a PITA when it comes to hybrid stuff.

my friends and i are the same way.
my tastes are toward something much tamer. sr in a 240z with a custom suspension in the rear.
i have even half-heartedly looked into buying a 240z...
the sr has been into a ton of cars that i've seen or heard of- r32, r33, r34, fc, fd, 510, z33, 260z, eggs, and more i'm sure! now even VWs have been civilized http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep, I saw pics of a 'DET' under the hood of a 350z already.

....Like they read my mind....

This particular 'DET' was an SR20DET, not to be confused with the CA18DET, or the RB20DET, or even a 'DETT' like the RB26DETT or VG30DETT.
