I've been debating this dilemna for some time now. I can get the LX470 through a relative who works for Toyota at below invoice(~55K fully loaded - a great deal). This is about the same price for a fully loaded QX56(4x4). I've always liked the LX470 - you can't get any refined and luxurious that this baby. However, it's undersized and underpowered when compared to the QX56. When I first saw the QX56 I was less than thrilled at it's styling, definitely not "love at first sight". Being a first year SUV model also makes me weary. You can't however ignore what it has to offer, size and power! Oh, decisions, decisions. At this moment, I'm leaning towards the LX470. Anyone have additional inputs.

I talked to a local body shop, showed them the picture of the QX56 and then asked them if it is possible for them to cut the metal part on top of the QX56's headlights and then add the FX headlight to fill up the huge gap.....As most people know that huge gap on top of the QX's headlights made the front look ugly...They told me they could do it!!...I am so excited about it....I know I could buy a Qx56 if something could be done with the front.....What do you guys think? Having to add the FX's headlights on top of the QX56's headlights?? The FX headlights will function only as signal lights when added on top of the QX56's....Will like to hear some feed-backs.

Yeah it does have that Bull Dolphin look. Sort a like a big ole Frankenstein forehead comin at cha. "Ahhhh run for your lives........" interor is nice though. So buy this big ole fugly beast and get a nice leather seat on which to sit while the villagers chase you screaming with torches at the ready.

Instead of putting the FX headlights...here is a idea. Put the Q45s headlights on there. That thing would look like a beast for sure then.

IF you can get a new LX470 that cheap you should buy it, drive it for a year, sell it for your $55k purchase price (very good residuals - I tried to buy a year old one) and then get a QX56 in it's 2nd model year (after bugfixes and other improvements and for invoice price - perhaps $45k).

Yes you can. QX56 has independent axles on both ends! The LX470 has the same suspension as a Conestoga wagon with shock absorbers.

Not a bad idea, its always good to wait a year when a new car comes out so the manufacturer can get out all of the "kinks."

I'm not sure I agree w/ your statement. This is the spec for the LX470 suspension. Hardly what you'd find in a Conestoga wagon.
- Front suspension: Independent, double-wishbone with high-mount upper and lower arms, torsion bars, electronically controlled shock absorbers with gas-pressurized control actuator, stabilizer bar.
- Rear suspension: Live axle, four trailing lines, lateral rod, coil springs, electronically controlled shock absorbers with gas-pressurized control actuator, stabilizer bar.

Live rear axle is the kicker. A 50K luxury SUV shouldn't have the same suspension set-up as an 80's Ford F150.

I have a 1998 LX 470 that I'm going to sell and buy the QX56. I love the ride of the LX. I drove both the Cadallic and Lincoln and they don't compare. I'm just hoping the ride of the QX comes close to the 470. I'm getting the QX for the side curtain airbags, towing capacity (I'm overlimit with the 470), and bigger 2nd row seats. Word is that they are going to discontinue the 470 after the 2005 model year and replace it with a Lexus version of the Toyota Sequoia.

The tough live axle is there to make the LX470 about 1000X better off road than the QX56 (or anything else short of a MB G-wagon). The LX470 has user controllable air suspension as standard and a superb ride which I doubt the QX56 can match. Also two years ago when I looked at getting one the LX470 was rated the quietest vehicle sold in the USA (this includes cars like the Lexus LS430). The LX drives beautifully and feels small for its size/weight but it is slow and expensive.

Like anyone's going to take their LX470 off-road. I doubt that's a real consideration. The difference is in agility, handling and pothole negotiations... conditions you're far more likely to encounter in real-world driving. How composed is the Lexus with it's beam axle going to be as you turn that corner on uneven pavement? The point is that the live axle is behind the times and that makes it a less sophisticated suspension set up.

The live axle maybe old technology, but it's a damn good one. If done properly as in the Lexus, it's a luxurious ride. This is an SUV made for both on-road and off-road. Why try to avoid a pothole when you can just go over it.

Well, you do make a point. Lexus is renouned for ride quality. They do seem to have made the most of the antiquated beam-axle layout.

The difference between the LX and the QX qill be the same as the difference between every Infiniti and Lexus. Road isolation and comfort in the Lex versus grip and agility in the Infiniti. Two different missions. You just need to choose the right one for you.

This is a real easy one for me. We have an 02 LX470 that I can't wait to get rid of. It is very, very nice vehicle but drives like a pig. It is grossly underpowered, even by suv standards. My wife was very enamored with it but has gotten tired of the poor performance. She drove Suburbans and Escalades prior to the Lexus and is really looking forward to the 56 and a little more power. The first one just arrived at Atlantic Infiniti here in Jax and we are going to look at it this week. If she likes it we'll place an order and have it built just the way she wants it.
