View Full Version : BMW Z-4M and 500HP M-5. Thoughts?

BMW will make a Z4-M this year. Could be 333+ hp from a 3.2 I6 or possibly a V8. A V8 would put it well ahead of the M3, which BMW probably would not do. The Z4's current 225 HP propels it to 60 in 5.3 seconds, which is quite impressive for such low power. If this effectiveness is present in the 4M, maybe it could compete with the base vette, or possibly the R35?

Another exciting development is the 500+ hp V-10 M5. It could also have a 7 speed on it. A large, luxurious beast that comfortably seats 5, and is as quick as a Dodge Viper, but costs the same. I'd take one http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Oh yeah, plus BMW quality >>> any Dodge. Also looks like Mercedes AMG series will be in trouble.

The power wars coming out of Germany are amazing...even in the 60's we did not see street cars churning out with 700+ft-lb of torque (like the AMG biturbo V-12's).

What a great time to be an enthusiast...what a lousy time to not have anywhere near enough money to grab one of these things.

I agree with most everything in your post except the part where the Viper and the M5 cost the same. I believe an M5 is significantly more than a Viper.

Not only will cost be more, but the M5 looks the same as a $38,000 525i that you see everywhere on the road (well maybe not the new Bangled one.) To me, if I am gonna buy a $90,000 car I want a little exclusiviness and to me a car that looks 95% the same as a car you see 10 times a day is far from exclusive.

BMWs always seem to develope more horsepower than advertised, which is good. As far as getting the M5 over the Viper, I would. I think that having people drooling over such a look at me car isn't very appealing. Besides, I would much rather kick Corvette's and Viper's asses with my family gettter look-alike. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually, it's less. The new Viper is 82k while the last M5 was 73k and at the 8% increase in price is still less than the Viper.

Second, there are key differences between the M models and the model it's based on. Of course, there's significantly less than if it was it's own model but that doesn't matter much unless that's what you care about. The next M WILL look like the current bodystyle - e60. Why would they make it look like the e39?

Eh, sub-100k isn't made to be exclusive(only in the minds of the owner). Profit Profit Profit... such is the way of the car manufacturer with very few exceptions to the rule. To a car enthusiasts it's more about the car rather the looks.

If they're bringing it out this year I bet we'll see the I6 since the M4/M3 won't be out till 2006 model year and everyone is saying that it will have a V8. It'll probably be just like the M-coupe/roadster that had the 240hp engine and 333hp engine in the same bodystyle just different years.

As far as power, just look at how potent the M-roadster was with 333hp!! Should be fun even if I can't afford it. =)

Some reports i've read said that the M-roadster originally got a 0-60 in like 5.0 - 5.3 seconds or something with 333 hp... Z4 hits 0 in 5.3 with 225 hp. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Motor Trend or Car and Driver said the M5 would cost around 79,000 dollars. About the same as a viper http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Kids in the back seat waving at the owned vette http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smile.gif lol, w00t.

Oh yeah, plus the M5 will look different than the current 5, which I think is really nice looking as is (I really do like Bangle's designs... my dad has a Z4 too lol, fun as hell to drive). Huge difference, like quad exhausts, some ground fx :/ lol.

If you're able to mistake a 2003 M5 for a 2003 530i then you're not paying enough attention. Sure the overall shape is the same but there are some pretty serious differences from any angle.

Not with 350+ lbs of extra weight in the passenger seat, in the back seat, and in the trunk, you won't.

German power all around is great, but, as someone else noted, it is not power to the people. It's power to the privelidged. The muscle car era in the US of A was all about power to the people. Huge engines in normal cars, for normal prices. Alas, the Mustang is all we have left, but there seems to be hope on the horizon (Mustang GT, GTO, Charger).

Not the GTO...too expensive.

Slack... $35K for a GTO is hardly a "normal" car price. Hey, does that include the gas-guzzler tax?

Paaaaay to plaaaaay, kids. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

February on my 2004 GM "GOTTA HAVE PRODUCTS http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif" calendar is blue GTO month. I like the GTO (and I'm sure the Blaupunkt stereo system is amazing), but the price is... well, it's up there. But I don't think it's too-high price. It competes well with Japanese V6 cars like the Infiniti G35 at least in that segment. That's the way it's always been... American car gives you a V8 at the price a Japanese sports car would have a V6.

Bang for buck = Mitsubishi Evo / Subaru Sti. Quick as vette, almost half the price, can fit 5 people, very reliable, handle like Porsches. Plus Evo has 2f2f notoriety, for those of you who feel privilaged when you get gawked upon by people who own riced up civics and neons. SRT-4 is also a good buy, but neons are trash.

Whine whine whine. Look, Toyota doesn't even sell the MR2-Spyder in Canada. Canadians just don't have the weather and the ... disposable income necessary to consume such product!! http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I could do this all day, baby. http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/cool.gif

But yeah, all over the world expensive sports cars are making a comeback. But at the lower end?

I would give one of my nuts to own either one of these machines. I kinda have a thing for coupes http://forums.freshalloy.com/images/graemlins/blush.gif, but dang a 500hp M5 I'm sure would be orgasmic! Either way you can't loose.
