Default What about a VQ30DET in an S13? PICS!

I went to a friend's body shop and he told me he had a factory turbo VQ motor sitting in the back of his shop for about a year...

I asked what he knew about it and he said that it was out of a 2003 Cedric or Gloria and that one of his old customers never started the project and donated the motor to him... He can't sell it to anyone so he offered it to me for cheap...

But I don't know anything about it so I started looking online and this is what Wikipedia had:

"The 3.0 L (2,987 cc) VQ30DET is a turbocharged version of the VQ30DE. Bore and stroke are the same at 93 mm and 73.3 mm respectively, and it has a compression ratio of 9.0:1. It produces 270 PS (199 kW) and 271 ft·lbf (368 Nm) From 1998 onwards, it produces 280 PS (209 kW) @6000 rpm and 385 ft·lbf (387 Nm) @3600 rpm."

And I also found a guy who put the motor in an S14...

http://www.vq30det.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=14

and here is his dyno sheet... 371WHP(279.2 rwkw) @ 12lbs,

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b37/siluty/12psi.jpg

That's with a T4 turbo, larger injectors, and some engine management I don't know...

I read on Maxima boards that this motor has a stronger rods, different cams, different intake manifold, and that the stronger crank is becoming popular with people who want to destroke their 350Zs...

Does anyone know anything about this?... Any opinions?... Is it worth a shot?...
I just rebuilt my KA motor and this popped up... Don't have any cash right now but maybe in the near future I can make it happen... I'm wondering whether to drop a deposit on it or not...

I run my car on the roadcourse... I was planning on turboing the KA and achieving 300WHP/300WTQ and as broad a powerband as possible...

Here are the pics of the motor... just gathering dust...

The VQ series is not anything that difficult. Basically you need the RWD oilpans(which you obviously have), a 350z tranny that bolts right up, a throwout bearing spacer, new mounts, custom manifolds/exhaust, some pipework and electrical work and you should be done.

Oh, and a custom driveshaft is also needed, but this was obvious.

Go have a look at www.engineswaptech.com in the Nissan section, that will give you an idea of the work involved.

Other threads worth looking at are:

Im currently doing this swap but my build is just in it's early stages so there arnt any neat pictures or stories to tell yet.

That is a bad ass engine that JUN runs in the a few of thier cars (highly modded of course) Alot of the world is just catching on the potential of the vq engines have. I have a nice vq35 that i am swapping into one of my ae86's.

It will definitely require quite a bit of custom fab. You can't just run it stock because the turbo crossover pipe (or the turbo, can't remember which) wants to occupy the same space as your steering linkage. Honestly, if you just want to have a 300whp track car, you probably want it to be reliable and not be a pain, so just use your rebuilt KA with a good tune and you'll be fine. That's the quickest route to get your car haulin' on the track. If playing with cars is as much fun for you as driving, go for the VQ I guess, but personally, I'd just go the easy route that would give me the power I want without requiring me to be a pioneer of any sort.

I just too a quick look at ebay and wow, those engines cost nothing! I guess its because they are not in demand, but they seem like a really good option.

Do you need a standalone to make it work like the new VQs? I heard that the key has to send a signal to the ECU to get the car to start.
