Very nice write-up Russ.
You shouldn't need to reset the ECU. I tried it both ways and didn't notice any difference. |

I didn't reset my ECU. Reving a little high initially, but It adjusted itself after a day or so.

Great job Russ. Very clear and to the point.
Are you going to install a Pop Charger? |

IMHO you absolutely should reset your ECU after installing the popcharger. Here's why.
I installed mine then went to the dyno after driving my car around for quite awhile. I made less hp and TQ and my a/f ratio was off the map (started at 18 then moved down to 14). I went home and got some really good advice from Technosquare and Crawford. They both said to disconnect the neg battery lead. Immediately reconnect it then go drive the car normally for 15m. I did this then I immediately went back to the dyno. My hp and tq came back up and more importantly my a/f ratio reverted back to what it was before I installed the pop charger (13.3-12.8). Decide for yourself but this experience is proof enough for me that you should reset your ECU after installation of any breathing mod and simply disconnecting the negative battery lead does indeed reset the ECU. |

Does the Ztube or Popcharger do anything in terms of HP/torque???
The Ztube looks useless...

Don't flame, the search is down....So all you have to do to reset the ecu, is disconnect the negative battery lead for a couple of seconds??? Please let me know how to reset the ECU, I just had the Injen CAI installed over the weekend.

EQUATION WARNING!!!
From what I've read, the z-tube is a 3" diameter, where the stock tube is 2.5" diameter. Cross-Sectional Area = (PI/4) * (diameter)^2, THUS you'll get about 30% more air flow into the engine with the newer tube. |

Nice write up!
In terms of bang for the buck is this a proven mod? Can anyone list a part number for Z tube? Thanks |

z-tube / pop charger combo makes around 7-9 to the rear wheels...
putting on the z-tube removes a ridiculasly large resonator and replaces it with a tube with no resistance... |

I still don't understand the purpose for an ecu reset for a 6MT. I haven't seen it really explained anywhere.
If I put in 87 octane fuel, I expect the the ecu will know that right away and retard the timing. If I put 93 in the next tank, I expect the ecu will adjust without having to reset it. Am I missing something? Is there a list of things that the ecu won't relearn on its own, like A/F ratio, that would force a reset? Jason? |

DED, the ECU will automatically readjust after a short period of driving in any case. Disconnecting the battery overnight just forces it to start from a known state.
Jason recommends not bothering with a reset. |

nothg a ecu re-set will really do... its all phsycological I think... drive around in a Geo for 2 days then get back in your G and you are amazed at how fast the car is...
But, you get used to a mod just as easly, I know my car is faster then stock, and as fast as it was rite after I did the mods, but it feels slower to me because I have become used to it. |

Update: After 2 days of driving here is my experience. The Z-Tube definitely makes the engine louder under full throttle, and I can tell there is definitely a power increase. Not hardly noticeable, but a little. I have had the K&N filter, so I am noticing the change from the stock pipe to the z-tube. It was easy to install and I definitely recommend it for a upgrade.
