Thread: If one were in the market...

Arrow If one were in the market...

What kind of fuel economy do you guys get in your G35s? What are areas of concern when buying a used G? What years or trim levels are most desirable?

I'm looking into G35 coupe for my next car, and am more into the enthusiast side of things when it comes to buying a car, lol. Any input would be great!

    The powertrains are very reliable.

The 6 MT is <very> strong , except for 03/04 Syncros.
The 5 AT is also very strong and can be made to take 400-500whp with only a valvebody upgrade (and maybe a tranny cooler dep on location)

    I have owned a G35 and 2 350Z's (mechanically same car)

Fuel economy is not a strong suit, 21 mpg in mixed but hiway heavy driving is what I got on a 04 5AT model.

LOTS of aftermarket support as nearly all of the 350Z mods bolt onto G35 Coupe as well.

As for trimlevel the early "Sport" versions are desirable due to their Brembo Brake kits.
(a non Brembo car will bolt on a Akebono kit also though, which is the OEM brake on the G37 Sport )
Also 04+'s had some minor but desirable interior updates compared to 03.
The 06 6MT's got the rev-up motor and the 07's and 08 Sedans the HR if memory serves

Otherwise no earthshaking changes over the years of those classy and timeless design.

Hmm. I was hoping it would get around 28mpg on the highway (I commute 120 miles a day). Is it true that the rev up motors (05-06 right?) don't have as much support as the early DE motors? My buddy Ralph had an 06 Z, and all the forced induction kits he was looking at were only for DE motors. When did the G get dual throttle bodies? Not until the G37?

The rev up has good support. the late ones with the dual throttle body cant get a supercharger kit (except for one Stillen)

But twin Turbos are not a bad option either ( tho spendy)

The HR is awell sorted motor which has beefed up rods , rod bolts which are the weak spot in the DE for forced induction.

I'll have to search in the 350Z forum on Freshalloy sometime but we have a post that summarizes the motor fits by model year and transmisson option exactly..

I dont remember if the dual TB's started in 07 or if it was a year later...

For fuel economy, I'd shoot for the 7-AT G37. I might be shopping them now had I not decided to return to college (I just wanted to make myself more marketable). The G25 does not get significantly better mileage than the 37, despite the near 100 hp downgrade. And as I have said before, steer clear of the X. If you travel in snow, just get snow tires. The AWD is not worth the 2 mpg penalty and the added understeer on turn-in, IMO.

My '06 6MT coupe was flirting with 26-28 hwy mpg before 10% alcohol laced fuel became ubiquitous. Now it gets 25 hwy mpg at best. In town that drops to 19-20 mpg.

  12. #12
I've been pretty disappointed with my G35's mpg actually. Been getting 23.5mpg on the hwy consistently. 20's with 295s, 18s with stock size tires, driving like a grandma, driving aggressively.... doesn't matter. 23mpg. It's quite annoying. I'd like to get at least over 25mpg...

Trying to figure out why. I really don't want to spend $300 on o2 sensors if it's not going to do anything...

With some careful driving and properly inflated tires I was able to get my 04 to 25 mpg on the hiway..
but it wasn't an economy car when it came to this..

But it was so much car otherwise, especially for the money I didn't mind..

Everyone was saying 25-27 when I was looking at them, lol. Figures everyone was inflating the numbers a bit. I love the car, but the mpg sucks. I'll just drive the 240 more often I guess Such a shame.... (sarcasm) lol. BTW, when the 240 was in the 11s, I still got 30mpg on the hwy. I'm sure it'll be less now, but I think it'll still be my most economical car for mpg. The celica awd turbo gets better mpg than the G as well, and it weighs about the same too. That, I find ironic. Not getting rid of the G, but the fuel economy still sucks none the less. I'm doing about $400/month in fuel for commuting to work only in the G.
