    Disappointed at Passport Infiniti

Been looking at their lot for some time.

They seemed to have interesting deals and a nice selection and I have been looking for a decent Nissan/Infiniti daily driver to supplement my prepped Z.

So today I was looking at a 2004 I35 I could have paid cash for, they were asking 7k on their website.

I come in and the receptionist and some guy who obviously works there are too busy with their idle chitchat to notice me, even though I am standing right in front of their desk.
After a couple minutes a manager looking type comes in and I have to speak up to get them to notice me and ask for a salesman.

So then this salesman who seems pretty nice and professional shows up at his behest.

    Name is Ron.

I do a test drive, like the car, and notice a check engine light.
I dont think much of it, since in such cases you can just put that on a "we owe" slip for the dealer to fix.

So i like it enough ( even tho it is very high miles 140k!) to offer right away 100% of retail book for the car, booked out in that zipcode (22315) for the miles and the condition of the car (interior near perfect, decent but not newish tires, cheapo battery, 2 inch dent in hood, paint otherwise nice, everything seems to work ="good" condition for book purposes).

One thing i liked is that the CARFAX showed almost half the miles on the car were put on in 1 year.
This tells me its all hiway (which the salesman didnt even mention as a selling point, so I suspect no one there bothered to read the CARFAX beyond the first page)

it does have a dent in the hood and felt a little sluggish for a 3.5L, but it <was> hot day and the AC was on and 2 guys where in the car...
(And some dealerships put regular into these cars.. that might have also explained the sluggishness on this hot day, but more about this later.)

Properly booked out the car should be 6400 at full retail book. (Edmunds)

Their asking price is 7k so I figure he would accept i my 6400 offer pretty quick , since i was in a hurry I offered full book right away for a quick buy ,..which I usually dont and instead start by offering 80% of book.

But i get get nowhere with offering full book.

The guy refuses to give me a number that he can accept other than whats on the website... 7k.
Says "thats been marked down a lot already", "we have too much in it to go lower."

I kinda expected to get this dance, but I didnt expect him to be serious!

And he doenst try to argue the value of the car by quoting a higher book as I would expect... just says how they have to much money in it....

Sometimes NADA is higher..and if properly done, both Kelly and NADA had been higher than Edmunds, I would have been willing to go up, but he either didnt bother looking it up or they said the same thing i was saying....

Bascially he tells me they "have too much money in the car"

I know a large prime location dealer like this doesnt get his cars at auction but mostly on trade in.

So I am like: If you overpaid on a trade-in ,to subsidize a new car deal, thats your cost of doing business not mine.
And that does not mean I must now overpay just to subsidize a previous new-car retail deal...

To make matters worse, they refuse to address the check engine light.!!

I offered book under condition that they "we-owe" the check engine light (an automatic emissions fails).

    They refuse to we-owe it.
And he says, its' because we're sellingthe car is "as is"

I am like ok fine, then maybe the value of the car is not "good" but "fair" condtion if it cant pass emissions right now and has an unknown issue (come to think of it it was a bit sluggish) but he is not gonna like my offer for a "fair condtion" 04 I35 w/ 140 k miles....

Ron then said you can probably fix that for cheaper than we can here at the dealer.

    I am like Whoa!

(Idle speculation: Or maybe it was the sales manager who paid too much on trade-in and he is trying to postpone the GM noticing how much he overpaid to make a quota???)

Either way, all of this is their problem, not mine.

Car has been there a while, If I dont buy it, I am pretty sure no one else will, before it goes to auction (Its very high mile,... too high mile to sell in the DC burbs for over book) so then, they'll get maybe half of what I offered.

So Ron goes to service and after letting me sit by myself for fully 20 minutes (I checkd my watch!) comes back says its a TPS sensor and they "are fixing it"

Also I ask him : "what else you have in the lot where you can fford to be more aggressive?"

But we never start a discourse about those cars.
When he is looking at their inventory he is looking at anything but what I told him I like.
I tell him. I am not interested n dodges and Toyotas but he is like "oh I am just trying to catch up whats in inventory"

Why I am I still there then?

So I ask him "are you positive they are fixing it?"
    "Yeah that what they said"
"So, if i buy this car, the check engine light is not going to come on again with a TPS code in a couple days??"

He then uses suspicously vague and evasive language and when I try to get him to be specific a couple times,.. then he says:
"Uhm.. i dont know much about these things, let me check again"

So I sit there by myself for another 20 minutes (!) and am about to leave and start looking for him in service (cant find him anywhere even in service).
Does it really take 20+ minutes at a time for a Salesman to be able to ask a question of Service?

Eventually we run into each other again by accident as I return from looking for him in Service and he tells me its not fixed and the sales manager will not pay Service to fix it.

I tell him in that case it is generous of me to offer 6k now.

(which actully was generous, since the unfixed check engine light moved the car into the "fair" category which meant i was really worth much less than my original offer)

He says "we need 7" and so I take off.

it seemed like he wasnt really trying to sell me the car and was too busy with something else.
Either that, or his sales manager must really hate him to give him such impossible fixed conditions to move the car.

I have never had this bad an all around experience at any Infiniti dealer!!
And i been going to Infiniti dealers since the 90's....

This is kinda crazy for this busienss.. Since I had the will and the money when I arrived to buy a car right then and there...I should have been their dream "Up".

I think he said to you at least 10 times that he was going to take advantage of either you or someone else on this car. Sometimes you just have to listen!

    You may be right Brian.

So I went a bought a different car somewhere else today.

At M and M Auto when we couldnt come togther on the car I was originally looking at, I told them even though i have a budget, as long as the deal is right i was open to an upsell.

The same thing I told passport...
So at M+M they they upselled me to a car I could love.

I'll post the car up in the proper sub forum as soon as I take pics

Sometimes car salesmen can just make you scratch your head. Many years ago I was in the market for a new Ford and went to a dealer somewhere near DC (I was stationed in the Pentagon). Was looking around and a salesman approached me and the wife and asked what I was looking for. Told him I wasn't really sure at the moment expecting him to start showing us some vehicles. Instead he just said "If you don't know what you want you're just wasting my time", so we left. Went to another Ford dealer and bought a new Galaxy 500 XL. Drove back to the original dealer, looked up the salesman and showed him the new car. Laughed as I drove away.

Hard to understand an attitude when putting food on their table depends on their selling a car.
I was sent to the hospital for observation. I didn't observe anything so I left.

In all fairness I kinda got the sense from having been around the block, that it might have been the sales manager giving the salesman inflexible marching orders which kept any deal from happening on this car.

Aren't you glad now it worked out this way? The Max you have is a much better vehicle, so I guess they actually did you a favor.
