Thread: Unable To Fill Gas Tank

    Unable To Fill Gas Tank

Don't know if this is just a Z car problem or if it happens to other models too. This has happened 3 times now that I can recall. Filling up with fuel and the pump shuts off automatically when the tank is full. Get in and drive away and notice that there are 3 or 4 lights on the fuel gauge that are not lit. Happened to me 3 days ago. This morning I was getting a can of fuel for the lawnmower and figured I would finish filling the Z's fuel tank too. Inserted the pump handle and it instantly started shutting off if I tried to squeeze the handle full open. I kept putting fuel in a few squirts at a time and suddenly I was able to use the full open auto setting. Pumped in 3.9 gallons when the pump shut off and the fuel gauge lights are now all lighted.

Any ideas what might cause this to happen? I'm thinking possibly some kind of air bubble develops in the tank but I don't know why. I have driven the car several times since it initially happened 3 days ago and the bubble or whatever it is didn't go away. It may have happened more than 3 times and I just didn't notice that the fuel gauge wasn't reading completely full.
I was sent to the hospital for observation. I didn't observe anything so I left.

I have noticed that at times I have to back the nozzle out just a bit to get the fuel to flow without shutting off. I speculate that it might have something to do with the angle that the nozzle is sitting in the filler neck, allowing the fuel to back up against it before it travels the rest of the way down the neck, and making the pump think the tank is full. I could be wrong though, I frequently am...

I've heard this happens most often during the change from Winter to Spring or Summer, and apparently has to do with vapor pressure inside the gas tank. Isn't there a back-pressure or overflow valve or something in the neck of the tank? I know there's a vapor filter in most cars.

But it could also be something to do with the pump/dispenser, too. Did you experience this at the same station every time? Might want to try another station if so.

Or ....... it may just be time to trade cars again!

it may not be the fault of the car at all.

Many gaspumps are too sensitive to backpressure shutoff.
try a different pumps and the problem may go away.

This has happened at different stations. I'm guessing it's not the pump because this morning I was at a different pump (same station) and as I described after playing with it for a bit I was finally able to use it at full flow till the tank filled. Seems more like a pressure buildup in the tank that shuts off the pump. No idea why it doesn't clear when I remove the filler neck cap. Next time I go by the dealer (if they're still in business) I'll stop and ask the mechanic if he might have an idea. I'm told he is an ace Z technician.

Problem is I don't know that the pump has shut off before the tank is full till I get in the car and drive away. Then I notice that the light bar is not completely lit. Gas is going into the tank full flow as usual but something causes the pump to shut off early.

Why are you concerned the dealer may no longer be in business? :(

Their creative bookkeeping finally caught up with them. The previous Nissan dealer had the same problem and one morning when the crew showed up for work they were advised to get all their stuff and go home cause the dealer was closed. Then Gilbert, who has I think 5 other dealerships around the state (this is the only Nissan) moved in and things were looking good till it was discovered they weren't paying for their inventory and not paying off customer loans on traded in vehicles. At the moment there is a service/parts guy and one technician but not sure if they will be there next week. I took this picture Tuesday morning. Sucks because the nearest dealer is either 70 miles south of here or 70 miles north.

Grant County Superior Court Judge John Antosz ruled Friday, March 1, Gilbert Nissan didn't comply with an injunction issued following a Feb. 19 hearing. He ruled the Moses Lake dealership needed to turn over the 37 vehicles it has on the lot.

All vehicles sold before the conflict will remain with the private owners.
The move is the latest in a dispute between Gilbert Motors and the financing company, Nissan Motor Acceptance Company (NMAC.) The company provided loans to Gilbert Nissan for new and used cars. It claimed the dealership sold vehicles without paying NMAC back.

When I live din Maryland there was a dealer RNissan that gave 10% freshalloy discounts for service.
Had one of the best service depts for miles around ( despite the presence of bigger dealers nearby).

But the owner was doing the same thing you described ( a real flamboyant guy who had his face on all the ads)
One morning Nissan came and took all the cars.

Service had been storing my snowtires/wheels in the parts dept but when the dealership got closed i never saw them again.

I may have a good one against Infiniti shortly but completely unrelated to filling my gas tank. Mine gets filled often! I was able to open the pdf. I have no idea where it came from though. You have some sort of vapor lock I suppose. It is probably a real problem some Nissan dealer needs to address and highly likely under warranty as emissions related. (meaning it is an emissions failure causing you not to be able to fill your tank and a 100K warranty item)

When this dealer first got going he had a really good crew and I bought my 370 from them. I met up with the owner one day and sat in his office chatting and letting him know how happy I was with his whole crew. He also had what I was told was a primo Z car mechanic who lived in another town, commuted 140 miles a day and eventually moved back there to work. The owner had never been around a Z and asked if I'd take him for a ride. Did one better and let him drive the car. He was/is a heck of a nice guy and I was surprised he allowed this situation to develop. We're kind of hoping that a local dealer who pretty much has a corner on the car market here will step in and become a Nissan dealer.

Maybe you can visit the GM of a local dealer in your Z and talk to him. Also point out a great local Nissan tech lives there (talk to the tech too).

All Mitsubishi dealers have creative bookkeeping. :p

Anyway, have encountered some bad Meijer pumps in the Midwest. One gushed all over my car after I shut it off after filling the tank.

Things could be worse; you could be in a rental Chevy Cruze with no means of locating the trunk release lever.
