    2015 Hyundai Genesis Renderings Revealed

    Just the Facts:
    • The wraps have come off the redesigned 2015 Hyundai Genesis ahead of an expected debut in South Korea followed by a North American debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
    • Hyundai released renderings of the second-generation Genesis, showing a fairly conservative makeover, with some cues borrowed from Audi and Lexus.
    • Hyundai said earlier that some of its new Genesis sedans will be equipped with all-wheel drive, as the Korean brand seeks to better compete with luxury imports.

SEOUL, South Korea The wraps have come off the redesigned 2015 Hyundai Genesis ahead of an expected debut in South Korea followed by a North American debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. The redesign is a critical one since it marks the first major makeover of the Genesis.

The Genesis debuted in 2009 and received a minor midcycle freshening with powertrain upgrades.

Hyundai released renderings of the second-generation Genesis, showing a fairly conservative makeover, with some cues borrowed from Audi and Lexus. One of the most dramatic changes is the car's grille, which seems to be copied from Audi. In addition to the more dramatic grille, the silhouette of the 2015 Genesis takes on more of a fastback look and the headlights are narrower.
The Genesis is expected to get carryover engines. The 2013 Genesis is equipped with either the base 333-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 engine or the 429-hp 5.0-liter V8 engine.

The 2015 Genesis will go on sale next year in the U.S. Pricing has not been announced. The base 2013 Genesis starts at $35,095, including an $895 destination charge. Hyundai has not announced 2014 Genesis pricing.

Hyundai said earlier that some of its new Genesis sedans will be equipped with all-wheel drive, as the Korean brand seeks to better compete with luxury imports.
The Genesis competes with the Cadillac CTS, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Lexus GS, all of which offer all-wheel drive.

Hyundai is in the midst of makeovers of two of its most significant products, the Genesis and the Sonata. A redesigned Sonata is expected to bow early next year.

Edmunds says: Is the redesign of the Genesis too conservative or right on target?

I'm calling it first, when the refreshed M/Q70 is revealed this will be the Hyundai it supposedly copied. I can almost guarantee it! I def see some Q50 in the this car, but being that the Q50 was just revealed earlier this year, def isn't a rip job of the Q50. Its a good looking car no matter what. Hyundai continues to impress.

Are you kidding me? That's a gorgeous car, and if the production version ends up looking like that I might be in line to get one.

Too conservative? Swoopy fastback roofline, bold upright grille, sharp sweeping character lines, classy stance, etc. etc. I'd say it's pretty bold styling, while not going overboard in a vain effort to be "different".

It kind of looks like the old Infiniti M with better proportions and detailing. I really like it.

I agree with NissLover that, given the influence I see from past Infinitis in the new Genesis, I expect idiots to claim that Infiniti copied Hyundai. It will get very ugly if the redesign of the Q70 looks even 10% similar.

I may see some new M in this but I also see some practical Jag. This is a good looking car. I'm not sure I get all the other interpretations relative to Infiniti though. You can only do so much with a practical design. This seems to handle it. I would also be a buyer if in the need. I hope not to be though despite the really good looks. I see no copy problem. Similar to remaking movie ideas. Everything has been done more than once with a bit of a change. This mirrors this concept in a really good way.

The problem Infiniti fans have with it is that they are shown a Hyundai that copied an old Infiniti design and then are ridiculed for liking a brand that copies Hyundai. Even the European press did this when the G37 debuted over there. I expected more from them. Moronic claims backed with zero evidence nor effort to research what one is reviewing should be exclusive to the American press. We invented the stuff.

This. The first thing I saw was Jaguar, too. My nextdoor neighbor has an new XJ, and I immediately spotted the resemblance. But you could also argue there's a good bit of Kia Optima in it, too.

And like you say, to one extent or another all car designs are copies of something someone did before. It's just a matter of how well those borrowed design cues are re-interpreted in light of current style.

I agree that all cars in the same era are going to have some similarities, but its always been a 'derogatory' tone that people claim Infiniti copied the Sonata and that Infiniti is copying the Lexus spindle grille. When it ain't true. But this has been dragged through the mud too much already, sorry I brought it up again. lol

But I think the renderings are awesome and should have all the competitions attention. But I will wait to see the actual car, because it doesn't look AS GOOD in this real world spy pic. the proportions don't seem as tight. But It is rather low quality pic, so not much to go off of. I'm mostly not feeling the grill from this angle.

It's appears to be a good looking car even in the low-res pics.

Cars in the flesh are seldom as alluring as in artists' renderings and styling concepts. The pictures above aren't conclusive either, as they're distorted and low-res.

Like Jay says, I'll reserve judgement until I see the real thing.

Yeah it looks really good. But it's going to run into the same juggernaut that the next Q70 will: an all-new E-class released within a year of its debut. The W212 is such a monstrous car- the E39 of this generation. Everyone loves it and no one can touch it on the sales charts. And it doesn't even have the reliability problems that the E39 did. People will be practically waiting in line outside the dealership to try the new one. MB could screw it up a bit like BMW did with the E60, but I doubt it. They are on such a roll, and seem to have the type of leadership that they wished they had 20 years ago.

I'm sure that the Genesis will find some sales if it can effectively undercut most of the class in price, though.

You can't touch an E-class with Genesis money, so I don't consider the two to be competitors at all. How many people do you think cross-shop Hyundais with Mercedes-Benzes?

It depends, I do see some Hyundai fans on the internet(s) claiming that the Genesis is sooo much better than the E. So they are at least trying to convert people.

It's kind of like the G35 when it came out. It was priced almost $10k below an equivalent 3-series, but was still considered a competitor. Looking at the size and equipment, the Genesis is definitely gunning for the E/5/A6 at a much lower price.

But these days, people are just spending the extra money and going German. Actually, with the crazy lease deals that I hear about- maybe it's not much more money at all.

Heavily camo'd, but it's not too hard to extrapolate the body lines. Very Lexus LS-ish to me. Cool tail lights! The wheels ... meh. I hope they're not the actual production versions.

Here's a look at the dash:

Nothing special here, but IMO a big improvement over the "inverted horseshoe" theme of the existing model.

    Thanks Mike!

The exterior is looking really good, but I'm not quite feeling the interior. It's got a very old-school American car theme with the dashboard being one big slab. It's kind of like the last-generation Avalon. What detailing and materials we can see look okay, but as you said, nothing special. If it retains its mid-30k base price, that's fine. But honestly, looking at some of the usual suspects in that starting range: the Q50, the upcoming W205 C-class, the A4, the ATS- I see better interiors in the competition. With the Genesis, it looks like you're mostly paying for a big increase in size for the price.

Yea that dash is very old school. Doesn't match the modern look of the exterior at all.

it's a good looking car for sure.

In a way part of me wonders if the Genesis isn't what the 1990-93 Q45 was in some ways.

I think you nailed it. If you're going to go old-school, at least match it with the exterior and integrate it with modern tech in a clever way. I just spent several days in one of these:

...and that is how you do modern-retro. There is continuity with the exterior in the E, and the interior still has modern shapes and flourishes while being a throwback to the 80s. The Genesis has a bigger nav screen, but everything else looks better in the aging E-class. Of course, it helps that the 80s design it draws from was the most modern of its time, and it helps even more that the car has unreal build and material quality. The E's interior door handles are real metal (I had a pre-facelifted one; the facelift also adds metal vents and seat control buttons), the knobs, switches and stalks imparted an alluring sense of well-oiled heft in their operation- does the Genesis match this? Sure, it's a cheaper car, but to make a dent, it has to be cheaper and better, like the Lexus LS400 in 1990 and Infiniti G35 in 2003. Also, my E350 rental had 40,000 miles on it with no hint of squeaks and rattles, even while driving over Indiana's third-world interstate pavement quality.
