Did Lexus just commit suicide? 2016 RX styling *ahem* critique...

So the new RX just debuted for the NYIAS.

And while I've been supportive of Lexus's more brave, out-there designs recently (not so much their decreasing interior quality), I cannot stand this one. It's completely beaten with an ugly stick. Unlike the IS and RC, which were a bit tough to swallow but seemed, IMO, to have redeeming qualities, I like absolutely nothing about this design. It looks like it's been smashed in an accident or hail storm (or both?) from the factory. And those rectangular wheel arches clad in black plastic are the icing on the ugly cake. The interior is closer to successful but comes off as a cheap BMW X5 knockoff to me.

Even the Lexus forum reaction to this is mixed; some feel that it won't age well and will turn away many of the female buyers who are prominent in this segment. To that end I feel they're on to something. The futuristic cyborg-meets-Lamborghini motif that kind of works on the IS/RC isn't going to serve them as well here. We'll see if its sales dominance is maintained. For the money, the German trio is far more attractive to me-- in particular the Mercedes GLE (kind of retarded name change, but very nice refresh IMO):

I don't know... I don't think its hideous but the whole floating roof copy of the Murano irks me. But the front overhang is pretty big. Something I noticed about the NX a couple of days ago when I saw one. I am curious as to how these latest Lexus designs will age, particularly the NX, RC (I can't dig that thing, bleh!) and now this. I am also curious to see if this design does turn off most of the women who drive them. It does seem more masculine in style.

I don't think they committed suicide, but they have taken a chance with 1/3 of their sales. We'll see how it plays out. Probably will still sell like crazy just on name alone.
    My Opin.

I don't have a real problem with the RX, with the possible exception of the cladding ... why would they go back to that? Otherwise, though, it is modern and "exciting" in stylist terms, and will probably really appeal to the younger set.

As for the Merc, that butt is, well, butt-ugly to me:

If someone blows up a school with a bomb they go after the bomber ... if someone shoots up a school they go after the gun.

A privilege is just a right that has been taken away by government.

Political correctness is cowardice wrapped in a lie.

RX is FUGLY IMO. Love the interior of that Merc , exterior is nothing special.
