    New 2019+ Lexus ES

So this car looks brilliant, as were its latest-gen Camry and Avalon platform mates. Unlike those two, this has not a single awkward angle or detail. It looks even better than the LS and has learned that old Nissan trick of hiding its FWD proportions well. (Okay, okay, VW/Audi and Mazda are decent at that as well!)

Why am I a bit conflicted with this car? It would serve as an excellent reliable commuter that's nearly as nice as an E-class or 5-series, but without many of the expenses and reliability concerns. Despite the Germans' quality improvements they are more expensive to own, and will remain so. That said, I still quite miss my E39 5er that I let go of to cut maintenance costs-- something that my easily-maintained V6 Altima has done very well for 2 years.

I'm a bit lukewarm because, as we can all see it coming, Lexus is going to replace the GS with this car. There is a replacement for displacement, but not for a proper RWD midsize luxury-sport sedan. These new TNGA cars are fantastic, and the FWD ones handle and STEER almost like an Infiniti G. But a new GS on the RWD GA-L chassis would be much better still. It enables the gigantic new LS to shed its old boat-y dynamics.

Really odd that this is happening because Toyota has been pretty militant about keeping their sedans around, while riding the CUV sales wave. They even said as much publicly when they launched the new Avalon: if others are going to cancel their large sedans, great, more for us! So I'm kinda pissed that this, as lovely as it is, is probably going to murder the GS (and by golly the ugly refresh they gave the GS was the first nail in the coffin!). It may keep me from getting one as one of my long line of $5,000 beat-up screwdriver cars.

Then again, I may be destined for a stable of old Bimmers anyway.

Jay, you can look at that gaping grille and say with a straight face that it has no awkward angles or details??? Lol.

What's really off-putting, though, is that to get one reasonably equipped you need to be ready to shell out 50 big ones. Only a few short years ago that would have netted you an LS.

As the previous owner of two LS400's, an LS460, an IS350, and an RX300, I've sadly written Lexus off as a ridiculously overpriced elitist brand. They were fantastic in the beginning, but they decided to concentrate on the country club set and left the rest of us behind.

    ^^^ This !

Have to agree I'd never plunk down the kind of $$ they are asking for these days on any of the line-up, just because of the fugly, gaping maw grill design Toyota has adopted. Ditto the Audi's !
