[Editor's note: The XVL is now the Infiniti G35. Read here for more info...]

According to Nissan, the XVL name is more than an alphabet soup that sounds cool - X signifies the future, V denotes the V configuration engine and L stands for luxury.

The XVL will likely be first a Nissan luxo-sport sedan in Japan to showcase a new direction in styling and a variety of innovative technologies. The rear wheel drive XVL platform is Nissan's most “global car” to date platform car and will likely be the basis of the new Z car as well. Thus introduced as an Infiniti concept car in January, the XVL concept has far more reaching implications than the Infiniti brand in the States. In addition to being an important platform to spin off other cars, many of the technologies used on the XVL will soon make it's way into Nissans regardless of the price.

Styling was performed at Nissan's Japanese studio. The XVL's futuristic design was an answer to criticism of Nissan's usually conservative designs. The aggressive and prominent HID headlights are suggestive of recent Mercedes designs. The side profile is similar to the Bauhaus cleanliness of the Audi A6. The tail is simply styled with angular lamp covers and devoid of overt detailing.
